Travis Granger If you want someone to truly represent you and fight for you, DON’T CHOOSE TRAVIS. Travis is a nice man and does a fine job fighting for you as long as there is no opposition. My ex-wife completely dominated the court process, using her knowledge of the judicial system, and how to manipulate it for her benefit and invoked delay after delay. Travis did nothing to counter. Proceeding started in Nov-2022, with a divorce decree granted to me by Judge Joe Pool on January 8, 2024. However, my ex-wife’s attorney filed for a new trial in March-2024. Travis was totally unprepared. I believed he thought that my ex-wife would be a no-show, just like on January 8th, when she was a no-show. When she showed up with her attorney, he was caught flat footed and failed to present my case properly to the judge, and the Judge Pool granted a new trial. New mediation was set for June 17, 2024. The first thing Travis told me at mediation was that I may need to get a new attorney because his firm, Brandon Bledsoe, was being bought by another firm, Smith Family Law, and they would not be dealing with Hayes County. It went downhill from there. Travis had no motivation or desire to really represent me or fight for me, and in my opinion, he threw me under the bus just to get rid of me and be done with it. I was an embarrassment to him after he failed to present my case properly to Judge Pool, and the judge granted a new trial to my ex-wife. There was no middle ground in the mediation and I kept telling Travis to just set a trial date. They did not listen to me and continued for another eight hours. After eight hours, even though I kept telling him to just set a trial date, I was tired and wore down, and they told me to just sign this agreement and then I would never have to deal with her again. It was a bad, bad settlement, completely lopsided and unfair, but Travis wanted to wash his hands and be done with me. He didn’t care as long as I was gone. If you are looking for an attorney who truly cares about your case and is truly willing to fight for you, I would NOT RECOMMEND TRAVIS GRANGER, even though he is now at his new law firm, Smith Family Law.

Smith Family Law is so lucky to have Nikki Chapa. I've known Nikki most of my life and she is truly the most honest, loyal, reliable, and trustworthy person you could hope to call a friend. Nikki for years and years has proven herself to be an incredible friend, oftentimes showing just how much she knows me better than I know myself. Nikki cares immensely for the people she loves. To love someone, is to truly know them, and Nikki's care for people shows in how effortlessly she holds onto the important (and not so important) things people share with her. Nikki will fight nit a grit for you and still have room for softness. I'm lucky to know her, and any client would be lucky to have her alongside them. She fights for her clients like she would family. Nikki has always had a way with words, justice, and fighting for what she believes in. She does this because she loves to and has a natural born talent with her words and craft, pairing with a fierce understanding of the law. You won't regret giving Nikki a chance to fight on your side.

I just became a US citizen and I do not think it would be possible without Jason. He helped me first with the resident card and removing all the conditions and then told me when I was ready to become a US citizen we could do that as well. He made the process very easy and I felt so prepared when I went to the interview to take the test. Don’t forget to study your 100 questions! Thank you Jason !

I can’t believe how fast Jason got me my green card. Really, in just a few months I became a permanent resident. He was referred to me by other lawyers who had mentioned the success he has had with other clients and now I see why. A high quality immigration lawyer. Incredible lawyer and person! Would 100% recommend!

My family and I have worked with Massingill Attorneys & Counselors at Law a few times over the past few years with our Estate Planning, Trust and other situations. They are always very responsive to our needs and timelines, and quick to point out options that could benefit us in the future. Outside of being extremely knowledgeable, it brings my family a lot of peace to know that Josh and his team have made sure we have covered all the bases. I might also point out that they are THE MOST TRUSTWORTHY group I have every worked with. It's refreshing to spend time with attorneys who really do have your best interest at heart and not just their own. Thank you Massingill A&C at Law!

I've worked with him for many years now. I love his easy going style. You can talk to him and strategize and he's very understanding of clients. Kent does not browbeat or lecture like many attorneys I've met. I've found that it's very important that I work with someone who is easy to get along with and that's Kent. He's been very successful with the work that he's done for me with both my personal life and my businesses. Kent is also a highly qualified CPA. It's wonderful to have a single CPA and attorney because it's usually so hard and expensive to get two people on the same page with tax and financial issues.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What challenges do you foresee in my case?
Understanding potential obstacles helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Austin, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
