Vaught Law Firm and Erin Leake were absolutely amazing in supporting my urgent needs. After my initial inquiry phone call, she and her team responded within less than 24 hours with a solution. Thank you so much, Erin and Team!

Jillian French is truly the best lawyer you could ever ask for if you are involved in a Family Law matter. In the most difficult part of my life after being served with divorce/custody papers, very unexpectedly, Jillian was referred to me by a friend who previously chose Vaught Law Firm. I called the firm on a Sunday, after being served the day before, on a Saturday. On a Sunday, Tracey answered the phone immediately when I called. It was a Sunday afternoon and she took my call right away, and in a calm, centered, unbelievably peaceful, and reassuring way she told me I would be speaking to a lawyer the very next day. I hired Jillian the following day, Monday. We went to court 4 days later. Jillian is whip-smart. She will prepare you for any situation that is in front of you and stay by your side. This firm is caring. They are real people that are there for you. This firm is a team of professionals that are incredibly synergistic. It was Jillian and her team, Stephany and Candi that I will forever recommend to anyone that finds themselves in need of a Family Law Attorney. Stop looking for the best Family Law Firm available. This is the best Family Law Firm.

Pros
1
Experienced, knowledgeable, and professional legal team that fights aggressively for clients' interests
“If you're looking for an attorney firm to represent you on your divorce or child custody battle, don't waste your time hiring attorneys who claimed to charge affordable fees because it will end up costing you more time and money at the end. Trust me, I've been there and I wish I would have found Jimmy sooner.”
2
Compassionate and empathetic approach, treating clients like family
“They have integrity, honesty, and an abundance of knowledge. This legal team works hard for each case they have. You're not just "another person." They are intentional with the work they provide, and genuinely want the best outcome/interest for their clients.”
3
Responsive and communicative, available to clients even after hours
“They made sure to prioritize the needs of my child and I and to provide clarity whenever I was confused about matters related to my case.”
4
Efficient and effective at achieving desired outcomes
“Jillian and her team (especially Carson Clement) were always encouraging and consistently supportive. Their response to any correspondence from me was, as a rule, extremely timely.”
5
Highly recommended by satisfied clients
“If you're in need of a divorce lawyer who can tear through the toughest legal battles with the tenacity of a junkyard dog, look no further. This attorney is nothing short of a legal pitbull, and I mean that in the best way possible.”
Cons
1
Can be expensive, with concerns about cost-effectiveness
“If I could, I would rate it zero stars. Despite investing over $5k, my case never made it to court. Instead, we endured endless meetings that drained my retainer, offering little value to my case.”
2
Occasional communication and responsiveness issues
“If I am going through the trouble of making a bullet point list, make sure it is read and responded to completely to every item, check it twice before hitting send-- this message goes to anyone out there reading this!”

I just became a US citizen and I do not think it would be possible without Jason. He helped me first with the resident card and removing all the conditions and then told me when I was ready to become a US citizen we could do that as well. He made the process very easy and I felt so prepared when I went to the interview to take the test. Don’t forget to study your 100 questions! Thank you Jason !

Jason is widely considered one of the best immigration attorneys in Texas and my husband and I were impressed with how he works and the detail he put in to getting our case approved.

I can’t believe how fast Jason got me my green card. Really, in just a few months I became a permanent resident. He was referred to me by other lawyers who had mentioned the success he has had with other clients and now I see why. A high quality immigration lawyer. Incredible lawyer and person! Would 100% recommend!

I highly recommend Saira Ukani for family law representation. The true mark of her legal skill is her ability to be professional and thorough, while also compassionate and understanding. She is never dismissive, and takes the client’s position as her own. She explained the process in simple terms I could understand, and always looked out for my best interest. Importantly, she has always provided positive results. If you need an attorney, I recommend having Saira Ukani in your corner, you won't be disappointed. It is with the highest esteem that I recommend Saira Ukani for representation, and with sincere gratitude that I thank her for the outstanding job she has done handling my case.

I've worked with him for many years now. I love his easy going style. You can talk to him and strategize and he's very understanding of clients. Kent does not browbeat or lecture like many attorneys I've met. I've found that it's very important that I work with someone who is easy to get along with and that's Kent. He's been very successful with the work that he's done for me with both my personal life and my businesses. Kent is also a highly qualified CPA. It's wonderful to have a single CPA and attorney because it's usually so hard and expensive to get two people on the same page with tax and financial issues.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What challenges do you foresee in my case?
Understanding potential obstacles helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Austin, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
