He recommended I take the deal, which I did. But I remember very well he added if I did 2 years of the 5 years’ probation he would work to get me released sooner. Inside, I didn’t believe that would happen and he wasn’t being honest. But 2 years later to the date he followed through, and I was released from probation. And what a relief. Not being worried all the time. Yes, I had things to do on my end to make that happen. But I go to enough AA meetings and hear of similar offers people get and their lawyers do not follow through. Even when the person does their part. That is why I was lucky (grateful) to have him. That look he gave me in my eyes was sincere, even though at the time I wasn’t believing it.

Ryan was such a god-send to us when my minor daughter found herself in an unfortunate legal situation that could have had serious repercussions for her future. From the beginning, Ryan made us feel more calm and in-control of the situation. He was always available when there was a new development in the case, or we had questions. He also did a great job communicating with my daughter and making sure she understood the situation and what was expected of her. Ryan knew all the players and was able to negotiate the best outcome that we could have hoped for. We are so thankful to have had Ryan on our side during this stressful time.

My son had serious charges against him related to drug offenses. This included revocation of state probation along with additional federal charges. Ryan Gertz was highly recommended as a lawyer that would fight for my son. From our first meeting with Ryan, it was apparent that he was a highly skilled and experienced defense attorney who would make sure our son had the best outcome. With his legal expertise and commitment to acquiring the best results, he guided us all through this stressful journey. He clearly explained the charges, how this whole legal process would unfold, and how he intended to make sure my son had the best representation in court. There were complicated circumstances related to the charges and he thoroughly investigated all the evidence to build his case. Ryan always made himself available to keep us updated or to share information. He is very easy to talk to, always giving straightforward answers or explanations to any questions we had over the months. He really cares about his clients. With Ryan’s guidance, my son rejected a plea deal of 10 years and took his case to trial. Using facts gathered in his own investigation combined with his skills of presenting a compelling argument, Ryan was able to disprove the prosecutions charges and impact the jury’s decision. My son was found not guilty on the more serious charges and will not be spending the next 10 or more years away from his family. Instead, he will be able to regain his life in a short amount of time now, thanks to Ryan fighting on his behalf. Ryan’s legal team included Associate Attorney, Benjamin Jefferies, who was a great advocate for my son and worked alongside Ryan for the duration of the case. The office staff is very professional and helpful, Kayla and Angie were always quick to relay information, answer questions, or schedule a meeting. Ryan is a brilliant attorney! If you need someone to fight for you or a loved one, I HIGHLY recommend Ryan Gertz with the Gertz Kelly Law Firm.

I was charged with capital murder, amongst other charges and a victim of human trafficking. Ryan got the DA to see the true story and got me probation for criminal conspiracy. He's more than a lawyer. He goes above and beyond to help his clients and he truly gives his all. He told my family he would walk me out the front door of county jail and I'll never go to prison and that's exactly what he did.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Beaumont, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
