An inebriated woman rear-ended my car, a year ago, which eventually caused me to resign from my job (and withdraw from law school) due to exacerbation of pain from preexisting-health conditions. Subsequently, I went to a firm, who passed on my claim; however, they referred me to Austin Hartley; thank God, he took my case. After one week of Mr. Hartley representing me, though, I decided that we were not a good fit, and I sent him a termination letter severing our lawyer-client relationship because he adamantly tried to persuade me from seeing the providers that I wanted to see. But, boy was I wrong; I will get back to this later, telling you why. Unfortunately, we live in a country that still discriminate against people if they don’t belong to the generalized other or majority group. And, as a black man, I’ve had my fair share of unlawful and immoral discrimination based on the color of my skin. So this brings me back to why I was wrong about Mr. Hartley. First, I thought he was not going to represent me like he would someone, who look like him. Why? Because I falsely and ignorantly interpreted, from his tone of voice, that he did not like me, that I was just a paycheck, and that he was not solicitous about my wants and needs; and, that he was talking down to me as opposed to talking to me (assuming I didn’t know things like the Egg-Shell-Skull Rule). After sending Mr. Hartley a letter canceling our agreement, he called me back and explicated why he didn’t want me to see, whom I wanted to see. To make it simple, Mr. Hartley stated that he never worked with these providers before, and when it was time for negotiation, he wanted to make sure he got all the money he could get for me. But he still acquiesced; and, stated that if I wanted to see my own provider that I could because he worked for me. However, I begin to trust him, and I also acquiesced and went to see, whom he wanted me to see. Fast forwarding, not only did Mr. Hartley’s law firm avoid going to court, he made both insurance companies settle for the max amount that they could under their policy limits. Not stopping there, he also negotiated all of my providers bills way below what they normally would have taken. Indeed, I realized that my attorney didn’t have to be aggressive when negotiating my medical bills because he was going to get his cut straight off the top regardless…. However, he was absolutely right, and I was absolutely wrong, especially for prejudging him. Mr. Harley represented me in an unbiased and very professional manner, and because of him I can now take care of my children and take trips around the world. Thank you, sir! -John
