Larry Martin is an effective lawyer who knows how to get the job done, but in my experience the communication and follow through after the verdict fell short. I hired Mr. Martin to address a divorce/custody issue. Even though the verdict was a success. The follow through was a 2.5 /3 on a 5 point scale. The attention to reviewing information that was provided to Larry or his team. Resulted in countless emails/phone calls back and forth only for myself to reiterate the information had previously been received by his team. In addition, I wouldn’t say don’t hire Larry. I would say understand what your getting, set expectations on communications, and ensure his team is held accountable for every document their reviewing for you.

This is my first time with a divorce experience. Mr. Martin has been a god send. He is a straight shooter, does a great job developing a plan, provides options and very much approaches the event as a team. I have been so impressed with his ownership level and just a decent dude. Very appreciative to have our life paths cross.

When you need the best, the very best, then there is truly only one lawyer in Family and Divorce law and that attorney is Mr. Martin. . An extremely effective leader of people, Larry astounded me with his strategic ability, resourcefulness, and determination. Additionally, his technical expertise in family and divorce law is nationally respected and rightfully so. In my view, there is no such thing as an easy divorce and mine was very complex, performed under extreme discourse between the parties and to apply a little added pressure to the situation a client (me) who due to health issues was not as helpful as most clients can be. Larry took t all in stride. His “Game Plan” was second to none. Mr. Martin is an action-oriented, detail-focused, high performance individual. He is willing to take both ownership and accountability, and can lucidly present his conclusions that are always extremely well supported. Putting aside all of the technical skill and acumen of Larry, Mr. Martin is one the few people that has truly remained a simply “Nice Guy.” Someone, who after you go through one of the most trying events you can experience in life and come out on the other side, you just want to call him friend. Larry is someone I am very pleased to and do highly recommend without any reservation.

I'm a local Family Law attorney of many years' experience and had met Larry by having a case against him a few years ago and by seeing him speak at our Continued Legal Education seminars. When my Ex Wife sued me last year for what could have been over a hundred thousand dollars if she prevailed, I thought of the many fine lawyers I've known over the years and settled on hiring Larry Martin. Why? Because Larry is the consummate professional-- he adheres to the highest ethical standards of procedure and conduct; is a gentleman to the other side and to the Court; is extremely knowledgeable; is very thorough in his pretrial discovery and trial preparation; is an excellent trial lawyer; has an abundance of common sense; and is just a really, fine, honest, conscientious man whom I am glad to now call a friend. Not only did my Ex NOT recover anything against me, we countersued for moneys she owed me from our divorce years ago and recovered that, plus the Judge awarded us every penny of Larry's attorney's fees, which in my experience is unusual. I whole heartedly recommend your consideration of Larry if you are in need of an excellent family law attorney.

After undergoing a very difficult and painful divorce in San Antonio, I was confronted with a follow-on and very bizarre legal situation that stemmed from my divorce. My lawyer in San Antonio referred me to Larry Martin in Dallas to represent and guide me through one of the most challenging cases he had ever dealt with in his 30 years of practice. I will spare the details but suffice it to say that only the most competent, seasoned and professionally gifted attorney could possibly have navigated this case for and with me. What seemed like a reasonably open and shut case turned out to be a nightmare on so many fronts. Larry was never daunted by the many twists and turns relating to this case. Instead, he was dogged in his pursuit to bring a successful closure by winning in an environment of confounding legal rulings and questionable actions on the part of others involved, all of which resulted in 4 court appearances before finally being allowed to have my just day in the court that made the final ruling in my favor. Larry Martin was the backbone both as my attorney and equally as important, as my guide and friend. He kept me advised every step of the way from start to finish and he never stopped working to insure that every legal protocol was brought to bear. His staff is simply fantastic and their support, both administrative and legal was extremely instrumental in the successful outcome of my case. As a team, Larry and his staff are amazing in every way. Family Law is a remarkably difficult profession since it involves so many emotional and life changing potential outcomes. If you are in need of exceptional representation in any aspect of Family Law I can tell you look no further. You have found they very best in Dallas and likely Southwest Texas with Larry Martin. He is simply outstanding!!!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Dallas, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
