I hired the firm for a case in Dallas County. Steve baker was my lawyer for 3 months and it was a horrible experience overall. Steve was not a good advocate from the first day. For a defense lawyer, he never once made counter arguments. He was not an honest lawyer and all he did was tell me what he hoped would shut me up when I asked him questions. He represented me in name only, and I don’t feel he fought for me in any way. He allowed the prosecutor to demand ridiculous bond conditions and did not provide pushback at all. Instead telling me ‘it wasn’t worth it b/c he knew how the judge would rule’. He continuously told me misinformation and would then tell me something else later that was contradicting so I caught him in many lies. The first time I expressed concern to him, he became extremely defensive and tried to gaslight me telling me ‘he’s very passionate about my case and works really hard and I’m always questioning him’. He didn’t do anything but provide inadequate assistance. Consultations with other lawyers were my confirmation of his negligence as they were surprised by his lack of initiative and very shallow level efforts he had with the prosecutors/judge on my behalf. After my last hearing with him as my lawyer, he told me I didn’t need to come to the next one. I knew that wasn’t to make the process easier for me, it was so I wouldn’t see just how little he fights for me in court again. I fired him that same week. He sabotaging me by making wrong move after wrong me. Sometimes I think he was working with the prosecution. He genuinely just couldn’t be bothered to care about my case and treated it/me like an afterthought through his lack of preparation/pushback when dealing with the state. Anything they told him, he readily accepted and would come to me and tell me half truths or straight up lies. After I fired him and received his invoice with case notes, I received the final confirmation. There was key information from his communication with the prosecutor that he did not tell me. He also made up a conversation between he and I to make it look like I wasn’t following his advise and causing things not to go my way in court. very disappointed at his service. I was a client that gave him space to do the job I PAID him for and all I asked for in return was honesty but he couldn’t even do that. He exploited the fact I wasn’t familiar with how the legal system works and behaved very shady concerning my affairs. Do not put your faith in that man like I did, it will be made clear through his lack of action and transparency that your life and future is not something he cares about protecting. Your criminal record should not be put in his hands. I regret not questioning things earlier and firing him the very first time I felt he was not committed to helping me get the best outcome. It was my first experience with a lawyer and I put my faith in the wrong one unfortunately. Sad that lawyers can just waste your time and money like that. Its one thing to not get a result a client hopes for, it’s another thing to not even put in the work necessary to give your client a fair shot. If he knew he already had too many clients or simply just wasn’t interested in representing me, he should’ve just declined to take my case on. Now I’m back to square one and my new lawyer has to try and overcome the precedent Steve set with the state that my representative will accept whatever they say with zero counter arguments. My biggest regret in life is getting myself in an unfortunate situation that required a lawyer. My second biggest regret is hiring Steve Baker. He didn’t do anything I couldn’t have done on my own or with a public defender. I 100% believe another lawyer from the start would’ve gotten far better results. The justice system in Texas can be especially cruel and unusually penal and he is not someone to trust to get a fair or favorable outcome.
