After losing property in my home due to the negligence of my apartment complex I was forced to seek out legal representation. I cannot express how lucky I am to have had Brad and his team working on my case. During our over-the-phone consultation Brad was able to give me concise legal options as well as estimated costs that would be associated. Being that I was out of the country, Brad was always sensitive to my time restraints by providing immediate and straight forward responses. After only a couple weeks of negotiations he was able to reach an agreement with my apartment complex to pay compensation for lost property The candor and genuine thoughtfulness from Stum Law Firm made an unfortunate situation manageable and almost effortless. I would recommend this team to anyone looking for legal representation they can trust.

I was referred to Brad Stum Law Firm by a coworker of mine. Brad was instrumental in creating our LLC. This was my first business venture, and he ensured that I understood every step of the process and offered great advice for the future of the business as well! Brad was incredibly responsive, professional, and made the entire process very easy and painless. I loved his boutique style approach and felt instantly at peace once I knew everything was in his hands. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for a knowledgeable and trustworthy attorney.

I contacted Stum Law Firm for help with credit matters I was disputing on my credit report. I had tried to resolve several erroneous and false reportings on my credit report on my own but had absolutely no luck getting through to the creditors to receive proof of my debt(s) in an attempt to resolve the matter. I was in the process of needing to secure a larger line of credit for business purposes but was unable to do so due to the errors on my credit report. I contacted Stum Law Firm and realized I was in good hands from the very first phone call. They took the time to get all of the details regarding my issue and made the retention process really easy and simple and they started working to resolve my credit matters almost immediately. The next time I spoke with the attorney about a week later, he was calling to inform me that he had contacted one of the creditors and they were removing their claim from my credit report immediately. The second was removed about a week after that. Completely removed from my credit report! I can honestly say their customer service and professionalism really stood out throughout their time handling my case and I have recommended them to so many of my friends and co-workers who are experiencing the same issues with their credit. They didn't waste time and they truly cared about helping me resolve the credit issues I was having.

Brad Stum handled a case for my family where our emotions ran high and our questions never ceased. He was available and honest. He never wavered or caused us to doubt his abilities or true desire to work on our case. We couldn't have asked for a better attorney to walk with us through our difficult time. I recommend Brad Stum wholeheartedly.

Brad Stum handled my family law case with professionalism and expedience. My case had several curve balls and plenty of ups and downs and he was there for every step. He not only showed patience and understanding but was a rock during a very difficult time with his knowledge and perseverance. He made my case number one priority when my children were in need and ultimately worked out a great end result for me and my children. I not only recommend him for his work ethic and knowledge but his overall character.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Dallas, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
