To be honest, I have not dealt with many attorneys. However, Mr. Rentz was amazing. I called him with some basic questions about my son's case. He returned my call immediately. He allowed me to ask some basic questions and gave me answers I understood. His understanding of the law and Denton County were very helpful and informative. I would recommend Mr. Rentz to anyone who needs an attorney.

I contracted Mr. Rentz for a criminal case in Denton County. Although he took over the case at the point it was set for a final plea, the difference was apparent from the first conversation. It was evident to me that Mr. Rentz holds a certain degree of respect in the court room that my previous attorney lacked. After just one reset Mr. Rentz was able to work a conditional dismissal. Once I completed the required course the judge signed the dismissal and I didn't even have to return to court. Thanks to Mr. Rentz I can get the record expunged. I would highly recommend this attorney.

My husband got a DWI while we were on vacation north of Dallas. Mr. Rentz helped me get him out of jail, keep my husband's license and ultimately got my husband's case handled in a mostly painless manner. He really seemed to understand the justice system and knew the people he was dealing with. Call him if you need help!

John called me back to go over with me the options for my son and gave me insight into the awesome things he could do for us ! He spoke with me nearly over 30 minutes in his off time to ease my mind and tell me what he could make happen! This is a absolutely the best lawyer I've have ever spoken with !!! EVER ! John Rentz is an excellent lawyer. I was charged with a 3rd degree felony, assault on a public servant. That just sounds way more horrible than it was. We went through a year and a half of going to court each month, just to be told to return the following month. The DA kept getting changed. Considering the first DA was not willing to bend at all, even pushing for a prison sentence. It didn't look good. But John stayed on the case and was able to negotiate a reduction from 3rd Degree Felony Assault, to a Class B Misdemeanor for Interfering with Public Service. I received 2 years probation with 80 hours of community service.

I will forever appreciate his help and guidance through it all. This man is a man of great wisdom and he never one gave me the run around of anything. He spoke with firmness and with such clarity and I really needed that. Ex was abusive and it was scary trying to break away from that and save my little girl from growing in that mess. Mr.Kuykendall helped me put an end to it, ex signed over the rights and me and my little girl live in peace and I truly cherish that. I had never had to deal with any legal issues and he was clear and explained everything thoroughly. Definitely recommend him 1000%!

Also, she handles everything as professionally as possible. I owe her a lot. I highly recommend Bonnie for any family law situation where you need legal counsel.

I used Martinez Law firm to complete a modification to my divorce decree. As you can imagine anything that involves children is incredibly emotional. With prior firms every time I discussed my case with my lawyer it was like groundhogs day. I would have to bring them back up to speed. With Bonnie she never had to be told anything twice. I can't begin to tell you how ensuring that alone was. We got the case settled in a manner that the girls got to have their input. What a win!

Regan Donnenfield was a light of hope to my family at a time when my options appeared limited. The likelihood of a satisfactory resolution seemed high on impossible. She was able to change the custody of my children, lower alimony, change out of state visitation and electronic communication. She also represented me in court several times and I did not have to travel every time. She provided me with documentation for future reference and forms that I would need to be able to travel outside of the country with my children. Her calm and empathetic demeanor offered emotional support to myself and those I care about most. My children and I are eternally grateful for her service and I hereby highly recommend Ms. Regan Donnenfield without reservation.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Denton, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
