Faced with a complicated divorce involving child custody issues, I met with Jim Ashmore and knew, after that first consultation, that I had found the right attorney. I was completely frantic, and had no idea what to expect. Mr. Ashmore led me though the process step by step. His knowledge, professionalism, and compassion were priceless to me. Though the past 8 years, when custody issues arose, Mr. Ashmore handled them for me, and I always knew that he had my best interest, as well as that of my children in mind at each corner. Mr. Ashmore has always kept me well informed, and the level of trust I have in him and his team has always made it possible to move forward confidently and with a positive attitude.

I used Mr. Ashmore during a difficult divorce with child custody issues. Everything was great at first, however, when I encountered issues with my ex toward the end of the finalization, I could not get any help or return phone calls from the firm. I just needed some simple answers and I finally just quit calling and gave up. I am now seeking a new attorney for modificiation of child custody, which is going to cost me more money. Unfortunately, knowing what I do now, I would not recommend this firm.

In 2003, a surprise divorce filing with false accusation prompted me to seek counsel. Not a “yellow page” event, I networked my way to Jim Ashmore. Over the next 5 months, he helped me separate legal issue from drama, listed options, advised, filed, and navigated through the problem. I finally defaulted to a “soft” response. Jim cautioned me against this but respected my opinion and filed accordingly. Over the next seven years, several additional law suits were filed against me. I was at risk and (more importantly) my kids were at risk. Jim’s broad experience and penchant for detail lead to positive outcome throughout the entire dilemma. He always went over options, created a sound plan, and was well prepared for hearings and trials. Jim stays calm and flexible in court, adjusting when required. His demeanor and approach earns respect of judges, opposing attorneys, and witnesses. My observations are not based on whim. Exhausting legal work behind, my family and I are on the mend. This journey took me through 3 courts in 2 counties with (over time) 5 opposing attorneys. I simply continued to show up with the same attorney, Jim Ashmore.

Consulted with Chris about my case. It didnt take long to decide to hire him. He explained in detail the process of each stage my case would go and how he would help me. Cory was also a big help staying in constant communication about court dates and times to be there. I felt comfortable and confident with Chris's representation.

Mr. Abel helped me when I was falsely accused of a felony crime. He was appointed to me by the court at first and was able to get the case dismissed, but the DA decided to refile lesser charges on me (sore loser). Mr. Abel had done such a good job with my felony case that I decided to hire him on my new refiled lesser charges and he made quick work of them and got all of my charges dismissed. Mr. Abel hung tough with me through two courts. I never in my life thought I would be falsely accused of a crime but I was extremely lucky to get Abel as my lawyer! He was also a prosecutor for some time so he has relationships with people in the courts that some lawyers don’t. He did an excellent job and if you have the opportunity to hire him I think you’d be foolish not to. He’s really good and his paralegal Kory was very attentive and helpful throughout a very stressful time in my life.

Donna is a compassionate attorney who goes above and beyond to help others. During a very sad time in my life, due to the death of a family member, she took control and helped out with a settlement of an estate that had no will. She and her staff were great with communication in regards to court dates and information received from other parties. The results of the matter far exceeded what was expected. give her a call. It will be the best decision you ever make. Thanks Donna and team!

Donna Hernandez represented me in a divorce several years ago. It was a tough one with many difficult issues, but it all turned out great. I now have my son with me and life is good. I don't think I could have gotten through it without her.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Flower Mound, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
