Mr Carter handled our DWI case with the utmost professionalism and really cared about the outcome. He and his staff kept my son updated and on track for completing milestones and this was all during 20-21 debacle. Our family can’t thank him and his staff enough for helping us through it all.

I came to Mr. Carters office and he had me explain what happened, how we got here, and what’s next etc. He was able to keep me ahead of the ball on some situations and helped me to progress in the process with no hang ups. With his many years as a defense attorney, he has a heavy reputation and everyone knows him and he knows everyone. Lastly, the element I take away is that each visit he had some insightful wisdom and a lesson to be learned for what had been done.

Mr. Carter was referred to me from a good friend who I've known for a while and it was by far the best referral I could ever have gotten. Don fought for me as if he was my own father. He got me more than I would have ever expected. I've dealt with many lawyers in past and most of them were trash even after paying them good money. Don has been at this business a long time and it shows in the courtroom. He gets much respect from the judges and prosecutors and trust me that goes a long ways. If your in need of a good lawyer who will fight for you and is not all about money then look no further than Mr. Carter and his assistant Celia! I couldn't be more happy with the results.

Mr. Carter treated us with the utmost respect. Our case was misrepresented when it was handed to Mr. Carter and he ironed out the wrinkles and got us the best result possible. It is obvious he is highly respected in the courts. I highly recommend Mr. Carter for your legal needs.

I had only recently become aware of the significant punishment I could receive with the grossly exaggerated charges brought against me   by the prosecutor's office. Because of this, I sat with trepidation as the bailiff called the morning docket, asking each respondent if and with whom they'd arranged counsel. When my name was called, I said, "Present. my attorney is Mr. Don Carter". The bailiff looked up at me briefly before turning to the court clerk to ask, "If you ever found yourself in legal trouble and needed to hire an attorney, who would you choose?" "Oh, without a doubt, I'd ask Don Carter to represent me." The bailiff responded, "I'd have to agree", before turning back to me to say, "Don will likely come walking through those doors in a minute, sprinkle some pixie dust around and have you off to a vacation in the Caribbean before lunch time." Well, there was no trip to the Caribbean. What I got instead, was so much better, the chance to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas back together with my wife and daughter as a family. The local police, prosecutor's office, courts and legal system as a whole seemed hell-bent on forcing a temporary misunderstanding to escalate to the destruction of a family. My account of the exchange between me, the bailiff, and clerk is absolutely true and authentic. Over a number of subsequent appearances I'd come to appreciate, even more, the level of peer respect and admiration shown to Mr Carter in the courtroom (and everywhere). Mr Carter has been doing this, and doing it well, for many years. I offer my resounding endorsement of J Don Carter & Associates PC to anyone seeking the very highest level of legal defense possible.

I am an attorney in Salt Lake City Utah. I located Mr. Sanders on Avvo, when one of my small business clients was sued in federal court for the District of Texas. Mr. Sanders was responsive, provided urgent assistance in the case and directed us to a local published opinion almost directly on point. His responsiveness allowed my client to make some important decisions quickly. I was very impressed with Mr. Sanders.

Great lawyer. Helped me when 2 other attorneys would not and got a great result. The defense attorney thought very highly of Mr. Collins as did the adjuster and they knew he would go to trial if he thought it should. That helped get the case settled.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fort Worth, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
