Melinda Owens came highly recommended from a close friend and she has provided legal advice and guidance during a lawsuit to collect money from a former business client. I found her to be experienced, responsive, knowledgable and honest. While working with Melinda, I felt as though my situation was in adept and trustworthy hands, and she did not steer me wrong. I would highly recommend Melinda to anyone seeking legal representation that is fair, honest and will keep your best interest and unique needs at the forefront. Should the situation arise, I would not hesitate to seek representation from Mrs. Owens team again.

I was misguided and told that if I allowed my child to go live with his dad prior to our change of custody orders being final, if ANYTHING happened, I could go pick him up and THEN she would deal with the paperwork. Unfortunately, fact was...legally, once I went against the then current orders, and allowed him to go out of schedule...I had no leg to stand on.

Melinda Owens represented me in my recent divorce and I want to share my thoughts on her representation: She may be pricier than some other attorneys, but I think her expertise in family law and her availability when you have questions are worth it. Don't be afraid to check out other attorneys, but definitely do not miss Melinda. I think you'll find that she's the kind of attorney you want on your side. Her office is conveniently located very close to the courthouse (judicial annex). She was relentless when it came to representing my interests. She helped ensure not only that my ex-wife or the court didn't take my child from me, but that I'd keep my income so that I'm able to raise my child. I pestered her at some odd times of day with some stressful questions about what my ex-wife could and could not do in my home and to my property. Melinda always answered timely and with answers that were very appreciated. She made stressful situations much easier to deal with. In the end, I think my divorce ended about as fairly as could be, and I owe much of that to Melinda Owens.

Mrs. Owens was very patient in her first consultation, noting all of my concerns and answering my questions. She was precise in her timing, follow up and conclusion of my case. Everything turned out exactly as she had presented to me from day one. No surprises or hidden fees. Honesty, integrity and respectful are words that I would choose to describe her impeccable character.

this is the 2nd time in my life where I've needed a family law attorney, and after the first time let me just say I'm glad to of finally found an attorney that not only I will highly recommend to anyone needing a family law professional, but one who made the entire process a breeze for my family. from the day we sat down with her for our consultation until our final court date, Melinda kept in constant communication with us and responded to any question we had in a timely manner. in the rare time periods she was unavailable, her paralegal was able to help us with any questions or situations that arose. Melinda went above & beyond to help us win custody of our daughter, and we couldn't be more thankful for her services!

I have always been told to get a will and I kept putting it off. I finally contacted Mr Davis. Him and Jessica made the process so easy I have no idea why I did not get it done sooner.

I was involved in a car accident and needed representation. When I googled, the first first result was the Cain Law Firm. From start to finish I was treated with care and concern. Brett Cain didn't make me feel like just another person. His entire office showed me respect and valued my opinion and thoughts. They worked along side me until the completion of the process. Any questions I had were answered quickly and thoroughly. Honestly, I can't express how happy I am with the Brett Cain Law Firm. I highly recommend this office.

Mr. Cain & staff we truly a blessing in a horrible time! I was in a wreck & didn't know where to turn. I went online looked up car wreck attorneys & he popped up. After reading review after review of nothing but positive feedback I decided to give them a call. He got me in right away, sat down with me and was very upfront about what he thought about my case. Laid everything on the table from what he could do, to what he wouldn't do and he let me in know right up front this is a long long process. They were in constant contact with me. Always available when I called. The ladies in the office would check on me. Anything I needed answered or done was completed in a very timely matter. He walks you through step by step of everything you need to know. They don't make you feel like "just a client" I highly recommend Mr. Cain if you are ever in need of an attorney! Very honest & hard working crew he has! Very satisfied with everything his office did for my family & I!!

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Granbury, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
