I'm a grandma who intervened on a cps case regarding my grandchildren and won! Leo Farias II, has represented me in the most professional manner, his ethics are of the highest standards. Honest, trustworthy and very straight forward. In unvarnished truth he will tell you exactly where you stand and what direction you should go. Leo Farias II has provided legal advice and guidance during a difficult situation. I found him to be experienced, responsive, very knowledgeable and honest. While working with Leo, I felt as though my situation was in adept and trustworthy hands, and he did not steer me wrong. Never losing site of the end goal, which is to protect, defend and have the best outcome for his clients. His friendship, courtesy, knowledge and honesty have become very important to me during the time he represented me in my case. He is well respected in the community and has earned this respect following the values of his faith and commitment to his vocation He will not run up a bill with chit chat or unnecessary communication. Very fair in what he charges for his services. I also would like to comment on his staff. Throughout my case, I have never encountered an attorney or there staff who are like Leo’s. They don’t take messages and make you wait days for answers or help and I’m so grateful to have them to answer all my questions in a very timely manner. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Leo Farias II and his staff to anyone seeking legal representation. They are fair, honest and will keep your best interest and unique needs at the forefront. Should the situation arise, I would not hesitate to seek representation from Leo Farias II again. He is always on top of the game and never misses a deadline. Don’t hire him if you are not going to trust him and let him do his job.

Retained Leo and firm as grandparents seeking custody of an infant grandchild. CPS was involved, rehabs were involved. Needless to say from our perspective it was a mess. After our first consultation with his firm there was no going back. We were in good hands. Even when the rehab provided an attorney for the mother and I got a knot in the pit of my stomach, this firm stood their ground on what was in the best interest of the child. We may be grandparents but Leo saw that this child had his only chance of survival with us. It’s been almost 5 years now. The mother has never reached out to inquire as to the well being of her son. Leo and his very qualified team are not in this for mom, dad, grandparents..... they do this because every child deserves to be loved, nurtured, protected and to have a life of opportunity. I waited to post this as I didn’t want it to come from a place of relief in my heart. I wanted it to come from my heart at a time where all the emotions of a custody case have been far removed. If you are going through a tough time and you need a divorce or child custody attorney look no further than Leo and his team

It's unfortunate to have to secure his services, and the services of his firm, but he and his staff has made my experience pleasant. Both attorneys visited with me right away, and filed my divorce within 24 hours. Their staff have kept me up to date, and have answered all of my questions. I am still going through the process (60 days not up), and both attorneys continue to guide and advice how to best handle every unfortunate incident that continues to happen. I highly recommend their services.

Mr. Farias was court appointed for my case, and looking back, I wish I'd had a lawyer to appeal this decision on time. I had never been through something so traumatic and am only posting in hopes of preventing this from happening to another mother. Read all his reviews FIRST! If you are a dad trying to get custody I believe he will be a great choice, but if you are a mother (regardless of the dad having no grounds to challenge custody) get as far away from this attorney as possible. Looking back now, i never had a chance. He showed up hours late, and in gym clothes, to our home visit and if you know how nerve wrecking it is to know someone will come judge your every move, this is inconsiderate. He took my kids to walk around the neighborhood without an another adult present and asked irrelevant Qs such as how much I like their step-mom. Whether I like her or not, doesn't affect what is best for my children. During mediation, he asked how many men I had slept with! (Their dad had tried to make me look like a woman who sleeps around - even though I had never brought them around any guy). He took what my kids' dad stated as facts, and although I kept detailed records of dates and incidents he never even considered them - I would not be surprised if he never even looked. During our home visit he also insited I bet him, hand shake and all, that my pregnant sister would have a boy - this was wierd at the time but I thought I was just nervous. I didn't want to revisit this as it was very stressful time and my case has been closed for some time but something inside tells me to at least try to warn others. It's in God's hands now, and my kids dad is not the worst dad, so I had to accept the system as I simply could not afford a trial.

I want to recommend Leo Farias and his teammate Karleana Lahens-Abner. The guided me trough the tough emotional journey of my divorce keeping my case attached to important facts, the only that matters at the end. Mrs Karleana Lahens-Abner was my trial lawyer. Smart, passionate, perfect Spanish, great capacity of reaction and focusing even against the oddest challenges from the opponent lawyer. Great team. Thank you.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Houston, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
