Due to unfortunate circumstances, my wife and I found ourselves in a situation requiring an attorney for a critical custody battle of our 8 year old son. With so much at stake, we wanted “the best”. Lacy LaFour came recommended to us by an attorney from a prominent Houston law firm after Ms. LaFour bested them in a case. From the day we met with Lacy, we knew we had teamed up with the right person. Lacy LaFour engaged and worked to know every intimate detail of our situation: the good, the bad and the ugly. She developed a solid game plan with avenues for adjustments as needed, counseled along the way as emergent situations arose, and prepped for every court appearance as if my life depended on it. I’m still amazed at just how intimately familiar she become with the particulars of our situation. There was never a time when I felt unprepared or did not know what to expect thanks to Ms. Lacy LaFour. When the time came for the final court appearance, even the Judge was impressed with how thorough our preparations and presentations were. The outcome was as favorable as we could have hoped for with stringent restrictions and requirements to protect the ground we gained. We are ever so thankful for Lacy and highly recommend her. She’ll change your world!!

I hired Ms. Lafour to represent me during an extremely stressful period of my life. I cannot possibly articulate the amount of gratitude I have for her. Lacy is an amazing lawyer, but that is only a small part of who she is and what she brings to the table. Lacy has the ability to connect with her clients in a way that few people can; and I experienced that first hand. Not only was she able to successfully and flawlessly navigate me through a complicated litigation process, but she also exuded genuine empathy for my situation. Clients are typically in an extremely stressful phase of their lives when they find a need to reach out to an attorney like Ms. LaFour. My situation was no different. Lacy is much more than just a legal mind; she is also a sincerely kindhearted and thoughtful person. She was always available to listen to my fears and concerns with a compassionate ear, and then respond with sound, intelligent advice. The soft skills that Lacy possess are also equaled by her tactical and strategic savvy. The game-plan she developed and executed highlighted her ability analyze each situation and execute it to perfection. Lacy is simply the best!

Lacy LaFour is a wonderful attorney and I cannot recommend her enough. She is kind and supportive, and was (and still is) genuinely interested in the well-being of my son. She is also tough but professional when she needs to be, and put in the effort to really understand my case and design a strategy to win it. All her skill, experience and hard work paid off when she reached a settlement that got me primary conservatorship of my son, which is an extraordinary success considering that my ex-wife has sole conservatorship of her daughter from a previous relationship.

I needed a divorce lawyer that was smarter than the rest and I found her by visiting this AVVO site. Lacy LaFour's rating was high and I really liked what other people (rating her service) had to say. I chose her right away and am very happy that I did. She is everything you need! She is personable, super experienced in all things in her field and will not lead you wrong. She spends time with you by phone or in person to fill you in on progress, to answer your questions and knows how to be empathetic to your situation. I felt like she stayed by my side every step of the way. She encouraged me and made me be stronger than I felt I could be. She quickly responded when I e-mailed or left a message with her office. Her office staff are just as great as she is. You will not be sorry if you choose Lacy LaFour! Her service is worth every penny!

I hired Lacy LaFour for a divorce settlement, in a difficult situation where my ex-wife had moved out and was seeking financial gain. The matter was further compounded as I was unemployed and attempting to start a business. First and foremost, Lacy was compassionate and truly cared. Secondly, without hesitation, Lacy's experience and professionalism kicked in and knew the exactly the steps to take to resolve the matter. Lacy is truly exceptional not just as a lawyer but as a compassionate person! I am in a much better place today, to a large extent to the extra efforts that Lacy LaFour did for me. As there are many attorneys out there to go through the process, none are more results driven than Lacy LaFour!

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Houston, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
