I knew after two close friends recommended her that Mrs. Winton would be my best hope for transitioning out of my marriage. She is poised, powerful, and clear in her counsel. She values your time and because of her, I’m thankful I was able to get everything I knew to be in the best interest of my family. If that wasn’t enough, I have personally transformed through the wisdom of Mrs. Winton. She was brutally honest with me and showed me where my mind and mantras did not align. I’m thankful for the clarity and alignment she brought in addition to her representation. I would recommend Ms. Winton to anyone going through a family transition!

Overnight, my world was completely turned upside down. I was in what I thought was a secure marriage. We had issues, like every couple, and I thought we just needed some tuning up. Little did I know my partner had been planning a devastating departure (infidelity + baby w/ friend) I was referred to Ms. Winton and not having much experience with the legal system I didn’t know what to expect. I was in pure devastation mode and just wanted someone to fix the mess I was in. Let me share what you will get with Ms. Winton as your attorney and help you along your path to moving forward: • She will be HONEST with you about what it is and what it is not • She will FIGHT for you to get what you absolutely need and what it is in your best interest, and • She will PREPARE you for each phase of the process so that you know what to expect In addition a few other thoughts: 1. Trust the Process: Divorce does not happen overnight, especially if it is a contested divorce. It will require your extreme patience and trust. Ms. Winton is actively working to get you to your new chapter, but to do that she can’t be on the phone with you every minute of the day. But please know she is working swiftly to move your case along. You may get updates every week or every two to three weeks, but know she is working on it and your case is important. 2. Attorneys are not your therapist: Ms. Winton is an incredible attorney who is going to get you the best possible outcome for your unique case, but to do that, she can’t be on the phone with you counseling you about your feelings (which are raw and real). For the best support and if resources allow, get a therapist to help you heal emotionally to allow Ms. Winton to solely focus on the legal facts and strategy of your case. 3. Strong Preparation: Ms. Winton was incredibly thorough in collecting all the discovery and facts from me as a client but also the opposing party to ensure she had the full picture. This is important, especially the discovery part. You want an attorney that is going to comb through the documents to understand the full picture, opportunities for you, and pitfalls to avoid. Ms. Winton and her team did all of that and then some. 4. Do Your Homework: If you want the process to move along quickly, turn in your documents and answer any questions asap. 5. Got Me Everything I Wanted+: Without going into detail, she got me everything I said I needed to begin my next chapter and then some. I won majority of the assets and custody. This would not have happened without her thorough discovery collection and frequent touchpoints with the opposing counsel. 6. Advised in Mediation: Ms. Winton was with me step by step during mediation. Again, didn’t know what to expect and she ensure I knew what I was entitled to, what I would absolutely get from my worst day in court, opportunities to secure advantage, and the items that were just non-negotiables. She was very well-versed and prepared. I wasn’t sure given the complexity of the case if we would be able to settle and her guidance and negotiation made it possible. 7. Prepared to go to Court…and Win: While my case was settled in mediation, I felt very confident that if we had to go to court we would have made a very compelling argument to win. I could see how better prepared we were as a team, and I felt prepared to stand in front of the judge and opposing counsel (which is half the battle). In addition, Ms. Winton is well known. I was impressed the relationships she had with the opposing counsel, judge, and mediator. She is not just well known, but well-respected both as a person and from her performance. It put me at ease to experience this very early on in the process. All to say, hire Ms. Winton. She will fight for you, keep you motivated throughout the process, and help champion you to your next chapter.

I had an excellent experience working with Attorneys T. Winton and J. Winton. They provided an exceptional experience, heard my concerns and were able to advocate for my child. I had a very unusual situation and needed an attorney to pay attention to detail and get things done for the best interest of my child. They were even able to secure things that no other attorney has been able to do. If you’re looking for an A+ team who will make sure you’re heard and advocated for, this is the team for you!

I worked with Attorney Winton to have a premarital agreement drafted between me and my fiance, and she was a pleasure to work with and very professional. The agreement was detailed and covered all conceivable financial areas. She is also very knowledgeable of Texas law, and I learned a lot during our initial consultation. There were a couple times during the whole process when it took her a little while to respond back to my messages, but this was just due to her busy schedule. Overall, I had a great experience with the Winton Law Firm and would definitely recommend Attorney Winton for any family or estate planning needs.

Mrs. Tecee Winton is a most excellent empowerer of women, advocate for what is just, Coach for life’s hardest path, and a fierce friend while doing so! I had a consultation with her when I was simply in shambles and scared to stand up for myself. She helped me see that I deserved freedom from my abuse and could do this. She said “We can do this!” And we did!!! I was never alone. When I was scared to death of my ex-bully, she encouraged me to make wise choices. She became my inner voice and my default. “My lawyer advised me…” I stood on her counsel!! She fought for more than I even imagined to ask for. She stood in between me and my bully and put him in his place like a tactful, intelligent, powerful BOSS! She helped me face hard realities and make incredibly difficult decisions. She allowed me to make decisions I felt I had to make, even though we both knew it would likely backfire. When they backfired, she never shamed me. She is SO incredibly intelligent!! I never had to repeat ANYthing to her. And she pieced my case together in a masterful way!! What an impeccable Guide!!! But I have learned it because she is ALL heart. She truly cares for her clients!!! I always felt safe with her. She is very matter of fact, but any perceived curtness isn’t from a heart that is uncaring. She keeps info to the point it’s needed. She’s respecting that you’re paying her for her time. Just TRUST HER!! Ultimately, I was victorious BECAUSE I had Mrs. Tecee Winton as my Advocate. She is impeccably professional. In court, I saw dozens of other lawyers. There were maybe two who looked as professional as her, and not one as intelligent and composed as her!! We were the only case in the room READY for trial. I will always be so grateful for the gift of hiring Mrs. Tecee Winton as my lawyer!!

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Houston, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
