Laura is the synonym of the best possible solution & the best outcome you can ever think of in your dreams. She is a great listener & strategist, her approach to address the issues is analytical and result oriented. She does deep analysis of the case and prepares a very thorough method of attack to drive the desired outcome. Her exceptional knowledge of International & Domestic family law makes her the best among the best lawyers. Sometimes this fight can be very frustrating and uncontrolled when it involves kids custody, Bankruptcy, Property, Immigration issues, CPS, Police, Psychologists, and several other similar entities. I became completely impressed with Laura & her team’s overall strategies to handle the issues during my extremely complex battle of child custody and divorce case. The best part was that I was able to work with Laura and her team very closely, hand in hand. I am very happy and grateful that Laura continued to effectively walk me through the process and got the job done. She even kept the process financially fair! Her team was accessible and willing to answer all my questions (even when I kept asking several question beyond their scope!) with full honesty and understanding. Even though the process took long, I am glad I had her in my corner. I would highly recommend Laura and her team to anyone who is looking for an aggressive and detail oriented attorney for a complex battle of child custody and divorce case.

Laura is the most competent and knowledgable family law attorneys you will find in the Houston area. Laura is well established and respected in her field. Laura is highly sought after, yet in her busy schedule, she is easily accessible to the client if you need her. She will fight for you and fight for what is right, with the highest level of integrity and empathy. Laura is handling my complicated high conflict case with such ease and class that she has given me a hope in a scary process. Laura’s associate attorneys, Ashley and Nicholas, are easily reached by email or phone and are experts who strengthen the case. Each attorney explains the law and case to you in detail, so that you can make informed decisions. The paralegal on my case, Jamie, leaves no item undone. Jamie is on top of all issues and responds to emails within the hour, to provide me with acknowledgements or updates. I have not once in 9 months wondered about the status of my case, because Laura’s team stays close to my side. I am very happy to have chosen Laura to protect and represent me in this complex process. I would pick Laura again in a heartbeat. My legal counsel is meticulous, pays great attention to detail, and are representing me with dedication. Laura and her associate’s fees are very fair and just. If you need one of the strongest attorneys in Houston to represent you, then your first call needs to be to Laura’s office. She will help you.

I am so grateful that I found Laura Dale and her firm for my divorce settlement. I was using another attorney before I found this firm and I was not getting any good feedback or results from that firm. It looked as if I was going to loose 1/2 of my retirement in my divorce. I contacted Laura 10 days before my court date and she and her firm stayed until late in the night working on my case several nights to help me get what I had worked so hard for years earning for my retirement. Laura made me feel like I was part of her firms family and they all did a tremendous job to get me through this difficult time. I admire the the caring attitude, sincere helpfulness and professionalism I received every time I contacted or visited the firms office. I could have easily lost hundreds of thousands of dollars but I ended up keeping my life savings! I can't say enough about how great this firm is!! I will never use another firm!

Laura Dale has been my Family Law attorney since 2003. While sad that I have needed a Family Law attorney that long, I am happy to have found her as she has seen me through a divorce, 3 custody challenges (2 of which went to trial), and my last divorce caused by the strain of the challenges just named. The first divorce was simple and she handled it as quickly and positioned me well as the subsequent custody hearings turned out to be very, very complex. Laura was able to navigate through all of the challenges to my role as the primary parent including CPS spite complaints and attacks on my child’s medical providers. Her 10 years of working in neuropsychology allowed her to understand and manage all of the nuances involving multiple therapists, pain management physicians, and a very clinical situation. She was able to recognize all of the underlying causes and how to deal with each issue in a very competent legal manner that protected all involved. She has a very open and direct approach and always looks out for her clients’ interests, whatever those interest might be, particularly the child in a custody dispute. Her sense of right and wrong will not only extend to opposing counsel, but she will use it to make sure that you are in check during one of the emotionally challenging situations anyone can face. When I get off track and respond emotionally, she will redirect me to what is best for my son and me. She does not hesitate to tell me when I am wrong, when I am right, or when I am sticking to a point that is less than productive. She came up with and designed alternative actions and language to protect and help my son after specific rulings, and she fought like hell more than once when opposing counsel was getting off track with a potentially harmful request. She set expectations and was able to deliver. I continue to use her without question and recommend her without hesitation.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Houston, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
