We hired this attorney and we settled our case for an amount well over our medical bills and attorney fees. Yet 18 months later no medical bills have been paid Either. She will not communicate with us. Took 6 months just to get part of our case files for new attorney we had to hire to sue her. Refused to give us all of our case files. Was told by attorneys that are associated with her Sample & Ames our money is gone and they don’t know what happened to it. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for help or you could be in the same boat as we are.

I was faced with all manner of false allegations and the nightmare of losing my four precious children. After all was said and done, Mrs. Steele pursued my case more aggressively than I ever considered possible. In the end, the horrific false allegations against me were completely dismissed, my former spouse was not able to break the geographical restriction and move my children out of state, my child support was lowered to the accurate amount, a restraining order was placed on an aggressive step-parent and most of all, I received more visitation than I had ever asked for! Bottom line, all anyone could do was talk about my hardship and losses; Mrs. Steele not only counseled with me, but was then able to do something about it. She strategically, and aggressively applied the law to each situation. Mrs. Steele saved my children, my family, and restored hope in the midst of utter hopeless despair.

I am a client of Ms. Steele and I highly recommend her for family court issues. She reviewed all paperwork and kept me abreast of what was going on with my case and would explain every process in detail so that I understood every step. She worked diligently to insure that everything was fair and equitable

Dina and her firm went over and above to take care of my divorce and child custody case. She fought for me and was in my corner every step of the way. Dina is compassionate, smart and dedicated to her clients. She worked weekends, evenings, even holidays to make things happen for me. I can't say enough good about her and the girls in her office. Unfortunately, I've had to use lawyers multiple times over the years to settle my divorce and child custody, so I can tell you she is above the norm in family law! I never waited more than 24 hours to hear back from them when I had questions and her knowledge of the law was above any other lawyers I've worked with in the past. She's not afraid to direct you to another lawyer if she is unable to do the absolute best job for you either. Honest and dependable! Hard to find lawyers like this one! Highly recommend.

Mr. Haugen and Delaney Meadows changed my life for the better. I never felt like a client; I felt more like family. I was cared for and treated with respect. Always updated on my case and given many opportunities to make modifications. Mr. Haugen did everything in my best interest. He never gave up and fought hard for my kids and I to be taken care of in my divorce. I will always be grateful for the Haugen Law Firm.

I wanted to leave a review, because I feel grateful for what John and his team have accomplished for me. I don't ever leave online reviews, but I felt like I needed to because of what has transpired. Many years ago I hired John to handle my child support arrears case. After many months of hell and trying to show evidence of payments, John was able to win the case and have my arrearage expunged. Now just recently I had to hire John again for modification to my divorcee decree. After meeting with John and going over what was needed for change, he put together a plan for me and help me get the appropriate changes. We never made it to court because John worked it out with my ex through mediation. We got what was needed for change, and I couldn't be more happy. John is not only a great lawyer, but I now consider him a friend. I feel like he really cares about his clients, and will work for you to get the best results. He's respectful, knowledgeable, and most of all caring. I will be using John if I ever need an attorney again.

I have had the opportunity to work with several attorneys, and John Haugen is, by far, the most ethical and knowledgable attorney I've had. I think so highly of him that I recommended him to friends and they all have praised him. The word several friends used was "compassionate." I have left several law firms feeling gouged by their practice of padding their billable hours. I have never felt that way after working with Haugen. Plain and simple...Haugen is an honest, compassionate and knowledgable attorney.

Michael Crowder is amazing! We were in a very scaring situation with my daughter with a DWI and a couple of other not so good charges. Michael Crowder was able to get all charges dismissed. He use to be a police officer for years. So he definitely knows the laws very well and how to navigate through the legal system. He is also very reasonable in price compared to other attorneys. I hope I never need a criminal attorney again but if I do he will be the one I call. He also, was able to get the cases expunged. I will be using him for will preparation in the near future.

I worked with Scott Rewak. He is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He understands and listens to the client. He gives his 100% to the client. He try to clean up the mess that my previous attorney created. Unfortunately, the judge was impartial and had made up her mind before she gave us a chance. Scott worked hard to prepare for the case and the court was able to hear the key witness.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lewisville, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
