I lived the worst nightmare of my life on August 28th. I was accused of shoplifting at Walmart in my town. It was Sunday, pretty early in the morning when I went grocery shopping for the week. When I went to check out, there were no lanes open for check out other than the self-checkout. I normally don't do these because they are a hassle and take way too much time, but I had no other option. I was scanning and going about my business. I paid the amount and while leaving I was stopped by a man wearing a Walmart vest. He asked if he could check my groceries. I had no problem because I was confused and am a rule follower. Long story short, I was arrested and taken to jail due to miscellaneous items that were not scanned. I was accused of theft that day and then a week later, lost my job as an elementary school counselor. My life changed in the blink of an eye. To some people, this might not have been a big deal, but to me it felt as if my world was caving in and there was no way out. I pulled myself together to search for a criminal defense lawyer. After sifting through ads, reading reviews on google, I came across Kyle Therrian with the Law Office of Rosenthal Kalabus & Therrian. Kyle had an availability that same day. I was a mess when I went in. We met. He talked me through the entire scenario from worst case to best case. I felt a sense of relief walking out and knew I could finally get a good night's sleep. Days and months passed before I heard anything about my court date. My first court appearance was set for December 2nd. I showed up early, dressed nice, and ready to get this process started. First appearance was standard. We met back at his office a month later to go over Pretrial Diversion. After explaining to me that I would have to admit to a crime I didn't intentionally commit, I realized that I couldn't go through with it. It scared me because that mean the prosecutors would have to dismiss the case, I could go to trial, or entertain the idea of pretrial diversion. Kyle gave me some homework to get done before our next court date. He rooted for me, believed my truth, and stood behind me. Yes, I know lawyers do that, but Kyle knew that settling for pretrial diversion wasn't something he could stand behind because he invested in me and learned that theft was not in my character. On February 9th, I made my 2nd appearance in court. I met up with Kyle, gave him all my completed homework and he went to work defending me and my character. We WON!! While Kyle could never guarantee that my case would get dismissed, he knew we had a solid case. If you are EVER in need a criminal defense lawyer, you don't need to keep researching.
