I found Ms. Hazel to be well-qualified. She is very organized, very responsive, and extremely knowledgeable. She works very hard on behalf of her clients and does everything in a timely matter. I highly recommend Ms. Hazel as she is not your average attorney, but has a great work ethnic, is on top of your case, and offers a calmness in cases where emotions can run very high. She was a huge help in filing divorce proceedings and custody issues for our daughter. She is excellent in all respects.

Phylis is a very trust worthy, knowledgeable and responsive attorney that always kept me well informed of the events going on in my cases. She has assisted me and my family, friends, my boss and the company that I work for and has always come out on top. I've never known an attorney that is so kind, compassionate and easy to reach as Phylis. She has assisted me with getting better custody of my daughter and representing me on other cases as well. I will be using her services as long as they are offered and I recommend anyone reading this do the same.

When my husband of eighteen years died, I discovered that he had no will and that he had four children by a previous marriage. I talked to some real estate people about how to get a clear title to my house. They explained the expensive and burdensome process that I would need to go through and that I would need a good attorney to complete that project. I contacted Phylis Hazel and she was very persistent about doing the research to locate the necessary parties, to get all the details and provide all the legal documents. She then contacted all the parties involved and met them in Dallas Courts to execute all provisions of the documents. During the entire process, Ms. Hazel was extremely professional and she was thorough and fair about dealing with all parties involved. While I thought that it was my house and I had never even met some of these people, I was very comfortable that legally my attorney provided the least painful solution. This process took about six months from start to finish and I was so relieved when the process was complete and I could move on with anything that I needed or want to do with my property.

I am beyond thankful for the Kersh Team. They worked a lot of long hours for our case, and worked with me during some very difficult seasons, showing just how much they cared and were listening by the choices they made and how hard they were willing to advocate not only for my little one, but for our whole family, bc we had been through a lot already and it was with their guidance and inspiring fierce attitude that married together with guidance from God that I truly believe we were able to end this year in a peaceful mediation. It was an honor having Christian represent me. As we went throughout the process I was honored to witness such a fierce, collected, professional, and powerful feminine figure. One that will inspire me to model and grow moving forward. I thank God for a process that seemed in the longest moments, at times hopeless, was all meant for a bigger purpose that turned into what was promised of a hope and a future, maturity, and us as a team to victory. I knew from the moment I met the team that they were the one I was led to, that exceeded my expectations and more by treating our family with grace, patience, were wonderful to work with, mindful of our needs and concerns, and truly worked hard for the good of us. Thank you, truly from the bottom of my heart with no expectation for anything in return, I genuinely wanted to publicly thank you for how good you were from the start to us. 🙏 You are loved and appreciated more than you can possibly fathom! 🤍 Forever grateful! ♾️ God is truly good! ✝️

Shane Kersh is an excellent lawyer that is very aggressive in the courtroom. He and his team are compassionate about you winning your case. They will listen to your concerns, they will be there for you anytime you need legal advice along the way, etc. They are very informative and take the time to explain things. I used Shane Kersh and his team for a child custody case and got exactly what I wanted- primary custody so I can keep my daughter safe. I am so happy I went with them- worth every penny. They were such a valuable asset in navigating my child custody case. I would not have been able to do it without them. I had shopped around for lawyers and no one was willing to help me- except Shane Kersh and his team. Super thankful for them!

We enjoyed working with Ms. McDonald. We hired her to prepare as we call it, our Life Paperwork, our Wills both living & Death, Medical & Financial documents. She did the entire package. We feel very secure about our future because Ms. Mellany McDonald has us prepared. I would advise everyone to get prepared and would recommend that they have Ms. McDonald complete the paperwork for them. Ms. McDonald is very flexible, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. You would love working with her.

I have had 3 lawyers,Jana was by the best. She was always told me the game plan, explained everything thoroughly and was always prompt to answer emails. She was the only attorney to ask how I was holding up; she realized I was a person not just another case. I can't thank Mrs. Wheeler enough for what she did for me.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Pearland, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
