Pros
1
Excellent listener who takes the time to understand the client's situation and concerns
“What stood out the most to me on my initial consultation is how much time Jon took to just listening to my issues and concerns. He genuinely cared about what I had to say and didn't attempt to over talk me or inject his opinion.”
2
Highly knowledgeable and experienced in family law, with strong relationships in the local court system
“Jon's knowledge and experience became very evident as we continued down the path of temporary orders, deposition, etc... Jon is highly regarded in the Courts system. Do not make the mistake of retaining an attorney who does not have years of experience in North Texas.”
3
Develops effective strategies and action plans to achieve the best possible outcome for the client
“Jon helped develop action plans as well as a strategy for how we could move forward.”
4
Provides compassionate and dedicated support throughout the legal process
“When I was at my lowest point in the divorce-custody process, Jon was the one person who kept reminding me WHY we are going through all of this stress-anger-emotional roller coaster.”
5
Provides transparent and accurate billing practices
“And his accounting of time spent was precise and accurate.”
Cons
1
Lack of attention and responsiveness to client communications
“Jon was extremely inattentive and virtually never returned calls or emails.”
2
Failure to properly prepare and file necessary legal documents, leading to unfavorable outcomes
“MR BOYD Failed to file the proper documents to the Court resulting in a hearing that went totally south in favor of the abusive mother et.al. Delayed submitting damaging evidence to the Court.”

My experience with Mr. Boyd’s law firm has been nothing short of exceptional. Jon’s knowledge of Texas law and years of experience dealing with child custody, make him an invaluable resource for any parent. From our first consultation, through several interactions, and until the complete settlement; Jon and his staff provided timely correspondence, and insightful advice on the laws and statutes pertaining to child custody, helping me navigate Texas legal system. This is a testament to Jon’s character, who truly cares about his clients and their future well-being. I would strongly recommend Jon law firm to anyone who needs help in Texas. This is a top-notch firm.

MR BOYD Failed to file the proper documents to the Court resulting in a hearing that went totally south in favor of the abusive mother et.al. Delayed submitting damaging evidence to the Court. Asked me on multiple occasions. "HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU HAVE TO SPEND ON THIS CASE". Thats quite the loaded question. He filed an intervention (without affidavit mind you) sent a stranger ANOTHER ATTORNEY FROM HIS FIRM WHOM we never HAD ANY CONTACT WITH EVER to the hearing who briefed me on my intervention for 10 minutes immediately before the hearing\- yet he wasn't even aware that my intervention wouldn't be heard because Mr. Boyd failed to submit an affidavit with the petition. Mr. Boyd later after the hearing said to me "oh I knew OPC was going to oppose ". Really?? than how was the attorney you sent to the hearing to represent us under the impression that my intervention would be heard....since, he briefed me on the intervention! It seems reasonable and fair to believe that the attorney (we never met or spoke with) assumed the affidavit was filed with the Court - otherwise why would he be briefing me on the intervention 10 minutes before the hearing? OR MR. BOYD JUST SENT A MAN IN A SUIT TO SHOW UP AT the HEARING!!! MR. BOYD WAS BUSY DOING OTHER THINGS. I am yet to receive Mr. Boyd's legal opinion citing the Texas Law that would even consider an 'intervention'. At this point, I have requested this several times, he does not reply. My conclusion....there is no legal merit.

My boyfriend and i hired Jon Boyd with hopes he could help us win my boyfriends son back into our home. When we met with him he was straight up about everything. Didnt give us any false promises, no lies, not salesman like at all. He new exactly how everything would play out from beginning to end of court. When we finally had court it went JUST THE WAY WE HOPED. He didnt stop fighting and we won. We won a hard case that really had no chance. If you're looking for an attorney he IS THE ONE. i have had a few family attorneys before but none like this! THANK YOU JON

Working with Jon was a very pleasant experience. Jon is very professional, knowledgeable, and reasonable lawyer to work with. He was easy to reach and communicate with at every step of our case. He was very good at anticipating what the “other side” would have to say and how they would ask questions. His witness prep helped me be prepared for being on the witness stand and handling questions/answers. We never felt alone throughout the process and had the feeling that Jon was invested in our case and had the same outcome desire that we did. As you can imagine, fighting for custody of your child is a very emotional experience – despite that, we felt Jon was in our corner every step of the way. If you need a family lawyer you can trust that fights for you, give Jon a call. Highly recommend Jon Boyd and his team.

Todd is the absolute best, I consulted with another attorney prior to hiring Todd, and Todd's keen attention to detail is what prompted me to hire Todd on the spot. I was accused of something that would have drastically altered my life trajectory. Todd was able to get the case dismissed, allowing me to continue on my path. Highly recommend Todd to anyone seeking a highly skilled, trained, and effective attorney!

If you find yourself in a bind, contact Todd immediately to represent you. He was able to take my case from start to finish and kept me informed every part of the process. I was found not guilty for my DWI and couldn’t be happier with the result. This case may have gone differently if Todd wasn’t my attorney. His team is also phenomenal to work with. He is worth every penny and also takes a genuine interest in your life.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Plano, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
