Cons

Poor customer service and lack of communication with clients
“The serious lack of responsiveness of the attorney and particularly his assistant was the main reason the calendar time is so substantial. This is an attorney who will not communicate with clients!”

“He took my money in december and then informed me that i do not stand a chance of winning my case. We were only talking for 30 minutes on the phone, he did not even review my emails. Lisa Jones Howard’s senior paralegal his right hand person is very very knowledgeable and was always prepared to help me. Don’t hire this lawyer. I wish I would have read these review before hiring Howard. I believe every one of them.

I hired this attorney to get custody back from my ex-wife and he did that for me. I had no real grounds to do it but Howard seems to get what he asks for due to his connections and the judge didn't even listen to my ex's lawyer and in fact screamed at him in the court room to sit down. Now I don't have to pay child support from my six figure income to my ex wife and she has to pay me even though she hardly has any money at all. I was fortunate to take away many of her rights as well, so I feel fortunate that I hired the right attorney. I would definitely hire him again for the same case.

Howard Shapiro is a seasoned pro - truly! The issues that the Shapiro Law Firm address are real life issues - family and criminal law. I hired Howard and his team for a divorce case that I had initiated due to my husband's chronic alcoholism. What that essentially means is that they were now involved in literally the details of the continuation of my and my children's way of life. Not for the faint of heart. And yet what I found was the caliber of lawyer, and his team, that were up for the task not just short term but for the long haul. I would describe my experience with Howard and his team as the following: Life..it does not always cooperate, whether done to you or choices made. At some point eveything's gonna go south on you..everything..and you are gonna say this is it. This is how I end. Now...you can either accept that or you can get busy. That's all it is. You just begin. And that is what Howard does. He does the math. He helps you solve one problem, and then the next and the next and if you solve enough you get to have a better life than the one you were living upon initiation of hiring the firm. If you were to ask me genuinely after knowing Howard and his team for years what I would say - you could not be in finer hands. He knows the law and can handle your case hands down, in and out of court - you will sleep at night no question. And on the back end as you work through your case you will pleasantly find you have a new friend and one you admire and respect.

Howard took my check in March, 2015. Waited to cash it until May, 2015. It bounced. I had the cash from my retirement fund. $6K The cash was taken by a hacker at the bank So he whined and c/ö I was a thief. Then at the mediation he assigned me a new lawyer The guy didn't know the case, he watched the weather on TV most during negotiations I got cheated. Never once did he fight for me. I was a battered wife. All I got out of it was $1300.00 alimony & half of his "first retirement". Not once did he ask about a 2nd retirement fund. Nor did my ex disclose it. There was a second retirement fund. I got cheated out of it because the change of attorneys didn't know the case. Don't go through what I did. I missed out of over another $300,000.00. This law firm is the poorest one to defend anyone. I don't feel sorry for them nor will I pay the $6K they said I cheated them out of.

Todd is the absolute best, I consulted with another attorney prior to hiring Todd, and Todd's keen attention to detail is what prompted me to hire Todd on the spot. I was accused of something that would have drastically altered my life trajectory. Todd was able to get the case dismissed, allowing me to continue on my path. Highly recommend Todd to anyone seeking a highly skilled, trained, and effective attorney!

If you find yourself in a bind, contact Todd immediately to represent you. He was able to take my case from start to finish and kept me informed every part of the process. I was found not guilty for my DWI and couldn’t be happier with the result. This case may have gone differently if Todd wasn’t my attorney. His team is also phenomenal to work with. He is worth every penny and also takes a genuine interest in your life.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Plano, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
