I don't like to start things out this way but I don't have enough negative things to say about someone that should be in a professional role and trying to take care of people issues. I'm in the military and was summoned to court, I gave Kevin 3 weeks notice that I wouldn't be able to attend, a day before the court date he decided to act on my information, charges me for $442 to cancel the appearance and to call the other sides lawyer, he's a scam artist. 2k retainer and he's done nothing for me. Be careful and protect yourself, He'll pitch a nice introduction to you but you'll get the worst service and be taken advantage of. He's a con artist that won't return emails nor phone calls. His assistant returns emails after a week or so that are so vague a child could have done so. He doesn't remember specifics about cases and doesn't even seem to check his emails since he always has to refer back to them when asked "did you receive this form or that". This is my first experience with a lawyer and I dread doing so again, I fired Kevin after settling the matter myself with my ex via a one on one discussion, do not give this man your hard earned money.

I hired Mr. Henderson to handle the modification of my divorce which my ex husband filed. It was the first attorney I have ever had to hire. I fell into his sales pitch of all the steps we would take to ensure my ex husband would not screw me over. He made ONE court appearance. During the consultation he promised all these things we would do during that court appearance. Then the day came. He showed up late, and advised me to give my ex husband everything. I sent numerous emails and phone calls the following day to express my upset. I put in writing what I expected of a lawyer and requested that he either work with me or let me know he can not so I may hire someone else. One month he was my lawyer. That is it. One month. He made no court filings, no copies, no mediation was done or scheduled, nothing. When I finally had enough of the lack of communication on my case and realized how much my daughter was suffering by being caught in the mess I demanded to know the remainder of my $5000 retainer. Less than 2 grand is what they claimed I had left. 3500 was spent on what exactly? I cant even afford to hire another attorney now.

I hired Mr. Howard after shopping around, he had a competitive rate, and seemed capable and savvy. I'm glad I did. Mr. Howard was a consummate professional, spoke to me frankly and let me know what my options were. He was able to facilitate my case being dismissed, and I'm very grateful to him. If you need a good lawyer, Dave Howard's your man.

I felt like Dave had my back, and that I was in good hands. He went above and beyond getting my cases cleaned up, and took care of everything that needed to be taken care of without me having to do a thing. Dave was always on time and taking care of business. I'm sure he deals with a lot of people, but you always felt your matters were important. At the end of the day, he had it all taken care of perfectly, always laying out all options.

Jim spent an incredible amount of time preparing the defense for my friend, working with both the DA and the judge. Jim believed in my friend and defended him vigorously. He was able to convey very personal details allowing the DA and judge to come to an equitable sentence.

For many years, I have been struggling with the mistaken identity of a criminal with the same name and birthdate as me, who was somehow linked to my persona because of a mistake made by the officer who filled out the report. This issue was causing a lot of problems; it even caused me an arrest at the airport. After years of unsuccessfully seeking a lawyer that might represent me, I came across James A. Drummond, who handled my case and knew exactly how to proceed. The effort and time spent going above and beyond to help me with my case is priceless. I had this problem of mistaken identity for over 8 years, but James was on top of it, and he was successful in only 5 months. James was always there, whether I had a simple question or just wanted him to give me feedback about my case. I just want to state that if you need a lawyer, definitely do not hesitate to give him a call. James will do everything in his power to make it right and get the job done. I would absolutely highly recommend James to anyone. My wife and I will always be grateful. Thank you so much for all your help, James!

Where to start? Jay and I have been “roughing the seas” for two years with a difficult divorce. My experience with Jay has been nothing but great. The man knows the law and leaves nothing to chance. He’s a very patient but assertive in his doings. Never has he left me wondering about the status on the divorce and his communication is excellent. If he gives you the opportunity to retain him as your attorney, do it. Today solidified my divorce and my results were nothing but ideal.

Jay represented me in a very complicated, contentious divorce. He is well respected by the legal community and courts in Williamson County and known as a quick-thinking, creative, thoughtful and experienced attorney...all of which I have witnessed first hand. I would recommend him without hesitation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Round Rock, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
