Jennifer Smart worked very hard on a old case of mine this year. She did a wonderful job to get my bond reduced. She was very patient with me and helped me get my case dismissed. I thank Jennifer for being clear with the things I needed to do, and how things were going to play out. I would recommend her to anybody who needs help and needs an Attorney.

We retained Ms. Smart for a family child custody case while living out of state. Although we thought being out of state may be a challenge to achieve a successful outcome Ms. Smart and her staff were able to keep us very well informed and up to date of our case, through phone calls, conference calls and email. When she was not available to take a call due to court or personal matters her staff was able to assist us with any questions or concerns we may have had. Even then Ms. Smart always did a follow up call to ensure our questions were answered. Ms. Smart was able to work with us on obtaining dates for hearings that met our schedules to travel to Texas. We first retained Ms. Smart to assist us with a child custody case which she was able to successfully win for us. We retained her a second time to handle an adoption for us which involved an absentee father. Although we would have loved to rush through this process Ms. Smart informed us that we would be taking each step required by Texas law to insure the adoption could never be challenged in the future. This case involved many detailed documents and several hearings as each of the steps were completed. Ms. Smart handled every hearing with professionalism and was able to assure us at each hearing that our goals would be met. Ms. Smart contacted us prior to submitting each document to the courts for both our review and our approval of the document to make sure we all agreed on what we would be asking from the courts. Her knowledge of family law, child custody, adoption and all around court knowledge is very impressive. We were able to speak with Ms. Smart knowing that our conversations were confidential and none of what we discussed was ever disclosed to the other party. We truly appreciate what the Smart Law Firm has done for our family. At the final adoption hearing Ms. Smart entire staff appeared in court to show their support. It was a very emotional day and very well handled.

Mrs. Smart assisted me in a child custody modification matter. I work in an office where it is difficult to receive phone calls, so e-mails worked much better for me. Her and her staff kept me informed via e-mails and always responded to my questions. I was very pleased with my outcome.

Jim spent an incredible amount of time preparing the defense for my friend, working with both the DA and the judge. Jim believed in my friend and defended him vigorously. He was able to convey very personal details allowing the DA and judge to come to an equitable sentence.

For many years, I have been struggling with the mistaken identity of a criminal with the same name and birthdate as me, who was somehow linked to my persona because of a mistake made by the officer who filled out the report. This issue was causing a lot of problems; it even caused me an arrest at the airport. After years of unsuccessfully seeking a lawyer that might represent me, I came across James A. Drummond, who handled my case and knew exactly how to proceed. The effort and time spent going above and beyond to help me with my case is priceless. I had this problem of mistaken identity for over 8 years, but James was on top of it, and he was successful in only 5 months. James was always there, whether I had a simple question or just wanted him to give me feedback about my case. I just want to state that if you need a lawyer, definitely do not hesitate to give him a call. James will do everything in his power to make it right and get the job done. I would absolutely highly recommend James to anyone. My wife and I will always be grateful. Thank you so much for all your help, James!

I was referred to Blayre’s practice by an attorney that I know and trust. He described her as “great” and “solid”. That’s high praise from an experienced partner at a different firm. I was immediately impressed when I called and spoke with a paralegal who took down the basics of my case to refer to the legal team. He was patient and caring, and he didn’t brush me off because I needed a consultation within 24 hours or because this would be a small matter per their usual case size. He called back in a couple hours and let me know that they weren’t able to help me in such a short timeframe, which I totally understood. The thing that caused me to write this review is that he went above and beyond what any other attorney or firm has done—he emailed me a few referrals as well as links to free legal advice and other resources! This shows me that this practice cares about helping people even if they’re not profiting from it. I will definitely call Blayre Peña in the future if God-forbid I’m up against another legal hurdle.

Theresa helped me through one of the most stressful times of my life when a complaint was filed on my professional license. She was thorough and extremely professional as she prepared me for what I had to face. She had never been before my particular licensing board and although they did not handle my case as other licensing boards normally do, she did not miss a beat. She presented my case with confidence and assertiveness. I know that had I chosen anyone else things would not have turned out as well as they did. She is a caring, compassionate attorney who goes the extra mile and then some so you will have the best possible outcome.

I worked with Theresa on a property damage case. Theresa was very forthright about our options and personally kept me updated throughout the process. Due in large part to her honest and personal approach, we were able to resolve the situation with a demand letter and avoided having to file suit. She has great command of the small details, and is careful and thoughtful in her approach.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Round Rock, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
