I had already been around the block with divorce attorneys. Had been overtly frustrated by watching months pass and nothing getting accomplished, but wracking up large hourly bills. I let my current attorneys go and found out about Brita threw a friend. She offered a set rate to me with 6 months of unlimited serve and a solid game plan to get my divorce completed. And WOW! I'd barely had her for a week and things were getting accomplished! She's a hardball, go getter, no messing around! I was so overtly thrilled that my year long divorce came to a swift close with her at the helm. I could finally move on with my life! Love Brita and would highly recommend her.

I had a toxic custody battle with my daughter's father that I started doing on my own. I was scared, overwhelmed, and completely confused about what the next legal steps were or even what my options were. The minute I hired Brita, it was like a huge cloud was lifted. She was empathetic of my situation and genuinely cared about my case. She was TOUGH. She didn't take any guff from the father or his attempted "shenanigans." She saw right through him from the beginning which in turn, helped give me the strength to stand up to him. She explained everything step-by-step so I could understand and the reasons WHY we were doing them. She was honest and straightforward answering all the questions I had. There were a few times where I was nervous about how the case would end up, if things didn't go as planned, but Brita was always confident and calm and reassured me that things would go my way - and she was always right! She was my protector, and more importantly, my daughter's protector. I trusted her, felt safe with her and not once did she let me or my daughter down. She made us her priority and it showed in her communications with me and in the court room. I will be forever grateful for the fight she fought for me and my daughter. I'm thankful to say, with Brita's help, my story had a happy ending.

I was overwhelmed with all the paperwork and questions when it came time to file for my divorce. After reviewing family law attorneys and reading reviews, I decided on Ms. Long. It was the best decision I've made. Ms. Long is on top of her game. She responded to all my calls and emails within a timely manner. Sometimes you hear about having to wait for calls for days from your attorney (or never calling in some cases). This was not the case with Ms. Long or her legal assistant. She thoroughly explained the process every step of the way. She reassured me when I was unsure. As a stay at home mom of two, now having to go back into the work force at some point, because of Ms. Long, I was awarded a very fair and equitable deal. Ms. Long had a lot of back and forth communication with the ex -spouses attorney, but in the end, I came out on top and was more than pleased with the outcome. She truly had my best interests at heart. One other thing, she gave me her personal cell phone number in case I needed it. I think I called it one time. What attorney gives you their personal cell phone number? I highly recommend this attorney. If I was not pleased with her services, this site would have that review. One thing I would also like to mention. My children are both currently in Jr. High School. I would have never thought to get 'post secondary education' verbiage in my divorce documents. My husband will be responsible for helping with their college education in the future. I never even thought of this (taking it day by day!) Thank you Ms. Long and staff.

I was referred to Brita Long by an attorney that was working on my child custody and child support case. She (the original attorney) had to withdraw herself from my case due to some complications that occurred. This transpired just a few months before trial. Needless to say this was a very nerve-wracking and difficult time for me. Having to find a new lawyer with little time to waste, was not something I was prepared to do. I contacted Brita Long, got into her office immediately and voilà she began diligently working on my case! Within a week my case had turned completely around, for the better! Brita acted promptly to make some immediate changes with my temporary parenting plan, that were more than necessary. I instantly believed that finding Brita was a blessing in disguise! Brita has a very bold, upfront and caring attitude, which I prefer. She and her assistant are always thoughtful, professional, and quick when corresponding with me, no matter the time of day. Brita and her team have modernized and savvy processes that make meeting trial deadlines efficient and convenient for the client, which is appreciated when you are a single mother that works full-time. During preparation and trial, Brita fought hard, always with my daughter in mind and made sure her best interests were met. The outcome of trial and my case were better than I would have ever expected. Brita does not disappoint! She has an enormous heart and it shows! Brita has been very instrumental in getting me through this emotionally difficult time in my life…and I couldn’t thank her and her staff enough! Hiring her was beyond one of the best decisions I could have ever made! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Brita!!

I went to Brita Long to set up my estate, which included creating a Revocable Trust for all my assets. This trust was necessary to protect my assets for my minor children. Brita made sure all of the small details were completed, without putting any pressure on me. She asked me all of the appropriate questions and gently (and very professionally) nudged me to provide her with personal financial information in a timely manner. I had to make hard decisions regarding naming a Trustee and Guardians for my children; and Brita was there to counsel with practical advice while being fully aware of the sensitive nature of the issues. Brita and her assistant Jonathan are wonderful. I would recommend Brita and Jonathan for any legal issue you may have that is in her area of expertise, she is a compassionate advocate.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Round Rock, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
