Cons
1
Inconsistent quality of service over time
“We used Patricia several years ago and was greatly satisfied, she was compassionate, caring, and listened to our needs, so much that we recommended her for our son when he needed legal services. The first time we used her services the case lasted three months at the most. She took care of everything and informed us about every step of the case. We never were in doubt at what was happening, or what she needed from us. The second time the case stayed open for one full year; with her checking her calendar once a month and charging him $150 to ”
2
Lack of assertiveness and preparation in some cases
“She would show up for hearings unprepared and dishoveled. She often didn't know my name or any of the important issues she should have been knowledgable of. She went through the court appearances unorganized and uprepared relying completely on hand written pointers her paralegal wrote up!”

As a father of two teenagers, I wanted custody. You can imagine it is not easy. Therefore, the first and most important thing is to hire a competent attorney. After I interviewed 7 attorneys, I immediately hired Patricia. She could quickly catch the main points and understand my pursuit. She focused on clients’ needs and was willing to try it for me. She is very professional, listened to me and provided valuable ideas on how I should present my case to the court. She worked hard and even had a conference call with me on a weekend. Paula, the paralegal, is also very professional. She read all the documents I prepared. She read my Final Decree of Divorce and found more violations of my ex, which I had never known before. She was quick and efficient and always answered my questions in time. The fee is reasonable and may save more than others. They don't itemize the costs of each email or phone call, which may prevent you from communicating when in doubt. If you have any divorce or custody issue, I suggest you hire Patricia.

I found Patricia through an online search when my ex-husband was filing for a divorce. Once I met her and Paula, I knew I’d chosen the right firm. Patricia provided guidance and support when I was going through a very emotional and difficult time. She helped me understand all the steps in the process and what to expect with each one. She and Paula were available to me by email and phone. Instead of worrying about legal issues, I was able to focus on keeping my daughters and myself safe and healthy. Since we first met, I’ve had to retain Patricia’s services when things come up with my ex-husband. They understand the law around custody and divorce and all the little details that can easily scare someone in unfamiliar territory. I believe her fees are reasonable and fair. I would highly recommend her.

I would highly recommend this firm. They were patient, kind, caring and understanding throughout the divorce process. The entire staff was a pleasure to work with during this difficult time. Patricia is a wonderful attorney to deal with and her paralegal Paula is amazing. They were always very responsive and with me every step of the way. We recently finalized the divorce and Patricia was compassionate and kind on the day of our hearing. She asked me more than once if I was okay and expressed concern. She seems very thoughtful which is a plus when you are going through such a difficult process.

I retained representation from Ms. Brown after my last attorney's office became quite liberal in their billing practices and I required excellent representation that was also affordable. Ms. Brown, and her office, are extremely patient and understanding. They take the time to make themselves available whenever I call or email about any questions or concerns I have about my case and thoroughly discuss them with me when I do. Ms. Brown has represented me in several hearings since taking on my case and every time I come away feeling that I was very well represented and that the Court's rulings were in my children's best interest. I would definitely recommend retaining Ms. Brown's services, you'll get great representation and people that really do care about your case.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Round Rock, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
