Mr. Casey was extremely helpful with our child custody case. I never imagined that I would get the results that I did as a father. We were in great hands from beginning to end and I don't believe that we were just another case. He truly cares for my children and their well-being. Mr. Casey makes you feel like you're working with a friend, not a lawyer. I couldn't have had a better experience

I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Casey and utilizing his services during one of the roughest periods of my life. Mr. Casey has represented me during a rather emotionally turbulent divorce proceeding. He has always demonstrated the qualities of integrity, skill, and professionalism beyond reproach. He is a man of intelligence who is skilled in his craft as a litigator. I happened to have one of those "he said, she said" sort of scenarios with rather significant allegations. Mr. Casey was not phased by the task at hand. He was the best champion for my case I could ever ask for. His attention to detail was impeccable, and was able to illustrate for the court the inconsistencies in the testimonies of opposing counsel's witnesses. Mr. Casey has two rules: be kind and polite to his office staff, and be honest and forthcoming with information. He will not judge you. He WILL be your advocate. However you must realize he cannot effectively do what he needs to do without honesty from you as a client. He cannot know to much about your case. Even those parts which you might be ashamed of or embarrassed by. Mr. Casey has been a champion for my cause, a confidant, and a source of stability for me when my life was chaotic. He has held my hand as I wept both tears of joy and frustration. He has helped to not only improve my legal situation, but helped nourish my soul as well. He gave me one of the greatest gifts I have ever received; he reunited me with my children.

Where to start? Jay and I have been “roughing the seas” for two years with a difficult divorce. My experience with Jay has been nothing but great. The man knows the law and leaves nothing to chance. He’s a very patient but assertive in his doings. Never has he left me wondering about the status on the divorce and his communication is excellent. If he gives you the opportunity to retain him as your attorney, do it. Today solidified my divorce and my results were nothing but ideal.

Jay represented me in a very complicated, contentious divorce. He is well respected by the legal community and courts in Williamson County and known as a quick-thinking, creative, thoughtful and experienced attorney...all of which I have witnessed first hand. I would recommend him without hesitation.

Chris Schulz is an incredibly knowledgeable, hard-working and smart attorney. As a journalist and journalist educator for more than 30 years, I had occasion over the years to work with some of the very best media and open records lawyers in the Texas. And Chris is as knowledgable and savvy as any I've had the pleasure to work with. A former Texas assistant attorney general in the open records division, Christ knows the ever-changing, constantly being re-interpretted Texas Public Information Act like the back os his hand. I was very lucky to have Chris represent me in negotiations with the Texas A & M System General Counsel's office in a dispute over how to teach students to use the Texas Public Information Act. One of the things I liked most about Chris is that he is a good listener -- he understood my situation completely and applied his knowledge and negotiating skills to what I believe will be a good resolution to a thorny legal, academic and journalism problem. I highly recommend him.

Jim spent an incredible amount of time preparing the defense for my friend, working with both the DA and the judge. Jim believed in my friend and defended him vigorously. He was able to convey very personal details allowing the DA and judge to come to an equitable sentence.

For many years, I have been struggling with the mistaken identity of a criminal with the same name and birthdate as me, who was somehow linked to my persona because of a mistake made by the officer who filled out the report. This issue was causing a lot of problems; it even caused me an arrest at the airport. After years of unsuccessfully seeking a lawyer that might represent me, I came across James A. Drummond, who handled my case and knew exactly how to proceed. The effort and time spent going above and beyond to help me with my case is priceless. I had this problem of mistaken identity for over 8 years, but James was on top of it, and he was successful in only 5 months. James was always there, whether I had a simple question or just wanted him to give me feedback about my case. I just want to state that if you need a lawyer, definitely do not hesitate to give him a call. James will do everything in his power to make it right and get the job done. I would absolutely highly recommend James to anyone. My wife and I will always be grateful. Thank you so much for all your help, James!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Round Rock, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
