When I initially went to the firm, Tiffany was assigned to my case. Note: She assured me their portion of settlement would not exceed mine. God knows what occurred, but Tiffany was discharged from the firm. I was not notified until MONTHS later when I called to inquire the status and updates pertaining the case. I was met by Myra whom answered the phone. Her demeanor: portraying her carelessness, said, “oh, did you— get the letter?” I responded, “no, what letter?” And her response, “oh, the letter we sent you.” I say, “no” (at this time I have not received any mail from Matthis law firm). And she responds, “Tiffany is not at this firm anymore and Austin will be picking up your case.” My immediate thought was why haven’t I heard from Austin, or anyone from the firm at the least (they did not bother to notify me verbally while the letter was either never sent or lost all together) and in this time, I began to suspect negligence. I asked that Austin call me asap. I expressed to him how disappointed I was with Myra’s lack of professionalism, concern and decent courtesy each client deserves. He gave me his cell number and said to call him directly from now on. I kept in touch and remained patient for many months before I reached out again to speak to Austin about the neglect surrounding the case - It took and entire year and half to receive a [lousy] PROPERTY settlement. Nearly 2 years now and no payout per medical: While the entire duration of my rehabilitation(10 months), I was also seeing a chiropractor whom recommended this firm. When it came time to finalize and cap off the treatment, (as I was no longer progressing forward with the adjustments from the chiropractor), he was reluctant to end his treatment and continued to prolong the delivery of the ‘final report’ to Austin that he may make a demand of payment. I am certain we did a ‘final report’ three times or more over several appointments with ‘check up’s’ in between. The coercion that swayed me onto this firm was the statement “We work well with Matthis Law Firm” and considering where we are today, certainly they DO work well together. Almost too well. I was stumped by Austin with a 17.5k settlement. After two years, My portion is 5k. Total cash amount (including property): $7500 I was rear ended on a motorcycle by an SUV. My 5k bike was totaled and I now suffer from ram’s horn distribution upon the right side on my cranium (where the impact was). My jaw pops louder than one can clap, (this occurs at random when I yawn or chew) while it clicks upon opening and closing. My entire right side from my toes to my head is affected and afflicted with severe pain daily (muscle aches, joint pain, and dull numbness in my neck and back) (and yet 5k seems fair? That’s not even 1/3 of total medical settlement) Be careful who you do business with.

Unfortunately, for my specific type of case, I was unable to retain LawnOffice of Jim Kneisler and he explained why. But just from a quick phone call alone and a few minutes of his time he was very helpful and informative. In the stressful situation that I’m in he did manage to shed some light. He even went as far as professional suggestions of law firms who could take my case. Definitely give his office a call. A simple phone call has me confident enough to go to him in the future

I was involved in a motor vehicle accident and my son was with me. Other driver was at fault, but I had never dealt with anything like that before. Max Parker, Jana Imler and every other worker in that office went above and beyond to ensure medical Bill's were covered and maximum compensation was obtained. Didn't have to worry about anything after hiring them.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Angelo, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
