My crime was a federal felony for making a false statement to a bank. I pled guilty because it was the right thing to do as well as to avoid the expense – both financial and emotional – of going to trial. I was looking at 46-57 months in prison based on federal sentencing guidelines and was not eligible for parole. The judge sentenced me to time served of 1 day and supervised release of 5 years – an extraordinary outcome by any standard. This meant that I could continue to live with and support my family and rebuild my life within the community. Plainly put, Ms. Orr saved my life and allowed my family to stay together.
