Xochil Towers review of Cathy Compton is pretty spot on with the experience I had when she represented me as a court appointed attorney in Comal County. She claims they were never a client but, how did they describe their experience so accurately as to how mine was? Back during Covid, she had fewer reviews. Everybody's cases were pushed off for years. It's odd to read reviews describing her as an "amazing attorney". I'm guessing there was a turn of events that led to better representation of her clients? I am familiar with agencies that profit by helping businesses fix their ratings on Google. Even advising businesses to contact past clients and ask for a good review with the promise of some type of compensation. Anyhow, she did not act in a manner that seemed like she was on my side. It was more like she had her mind made up about me before actually meeting me to discuss my case in her office. Our first encounter seemed promising momentarily. Not so much in our second and third. One thing really stuck out during our conversation. She told me, "Take the plea bargain or face the consequences for your actions". I thought that was probably the most unprofessional advise any attorney could ever give a client. It was uncomfortable to think the person that was supposed to help with your defense in court, was acting like my judge and jury before receiving the initial plea offer from the prosecutors. She wanted me to take a plea for 10 years in prison. It was the first plea offered and she wanted me to take it, no questions asked. That was when I started asking questions of course. She went from a friendly, "amazing" attorney, to an extremely rude and frustrated attorney. She made it seem like I was out of line for questioning her stance on my case and ultimately had herself removed from my case immediately. Extremely odd at the least. That was a blessing in disguise. I received an attorney that did a much better job. Much more considerate and understanding. He had no problem answering my questions and acting much more professional all around. My cases were handled much better and I received the minimum of what you can receive, including my cases being reduced from felonies to misdemeanors and no prison time. There were discrepancies in my case but I understood that my self defense claim came down to my actions needing to match the level of threat and I received probation only. I feel like Cathy could have maybe done a better job if she would have conducted herself as a defense attorney instead of basing her position on what she thought of her client personally. I hope this review serves as a warning to potential clients. Pull her or have her pull herself from your case if you feel she has a biased demeanor towards you personally. You may not have the same good luck I had, if you proceed with her as your attorney. 1 year probation was much better than 10 years in prison. It was the difference between an attorney on the publics side and an attorney that made their decision based on their personal outlook of their client. I wasn't going to leave a review until I had a friend recently go through the same experience with another problematic court appointed attorney for Comal County. I felt like the public should know the truth on how comal county and some of its court appointed attorneys operate. They will appoint you another attorney if you receive a biased attorney. You can actually explain to the judge about your attorney's actions and will most likely receive someone not biased or problematic in their system. I'm sure my review may get a response. I will edit to refute and disprove anything not true in the response by Cathy, if there is a response to my review. After having my cases mishandled and watching a friend have theirs mishandled by a like minded attorney in the same county, I feel the public should be forewarned. Update to Cathy's response: There was nothing misrepresented in my review. Just the truth. Her stance was "my way or the highway". Withdrawing due to being frustrated with my questions was the reason.

We were desperate and needed someone that would hear our small voice in a huge system. Mr. Gonzales came highly recommended. The professional staff helped us secure an appointment immediately. After our consultation, we knew this was the place for us and hired him on the spot. Mr. Gonzales is professional, personable, knowledgeable, honest, caring and helpful. He gave us his contact number and made himself available 24/7. Any time I contacted him, I always received a return call or message without delay. If he was not available for any reason, we would still receive a return call or message from attorney Christian Henricksen. These two attorneys are a true DREAM TEAM. He exceeded our expectations. He is not just an awesome attorney, he is an awesome person. If you have found yourself or a family member in need of an attorney, Mr. Gonzales comes with the highest of recommendations. Thank you for everything Mr. Gonzales.

I was referred to Mr. Joe Gonzales by a law enforcement colleague who had dealt with him several times while working cases at the DA’s office. I was given Mr. Gonzales’s cell number and calling him was the best decision I had ever made. My initial meeting and impression of Mr. Gonzales was that he was a professional and he listened attentively while I explained what had occurred that led up to my arrest and charge. He understood that I could not accept anything but a dismissal or an acquittal or I would lose my career and future goals. He advised me that he would be working with a team that included Mr. Christian Henrickson and that I would be getting two lawyers for the price of one. I struggled emotionally through a year and a half of court dates until the case went to trial. Despite all my fears, Mr. Gonzales and his team reassured me and I knew they believed in my innocence. When Mr. Gonzales goes into “trial mode” it’s amazing. His cross examinations of the prosecution’s witnesses and complainant were direct and strategically effective. The trial was very stressful for me and as we were waiting for the jury to return with their verdict after deliberation I will never forget how terrified I was and how Mr. Gonzales calmingly placed his hand on mine and smiled and said, “Do not lose your faith now.” He was confident until the very end and even when I had feared the worst he believed in my case. The jury came back very quickly with a unanimous decision and acquitted me of the charge. I will never forget what I went through to fight for the truth and I will never forget how hard Mr. Gonzales and his team fought for me. They were amazing and I felt so blessed to have them fighting in my corner. Joe, from the bottom of my heart I want thank you and will never forget what you did. I would recommend Joe Gonzales to anyone who needs a lawyer because I truly believe and know from experience that he and his team are the best lawyers a person can have. His integrity, experience, and knowledge are assets for anyone who needs a professional lawyer to fight for their case. I would highly recommend him!

I was very concerned about what attorney would represent me. I wanted and attorney that would they be fair and understanding to my case. I was driving up IH35 and saw a billboard with Joe Gonzales picture and phone number. I decided at this time I would like to schedule a meeting with him to discuss my case. My first meeting with Joe was professional and honest, he allowed me to discuss my side of the story without judgement. He listened attentively and made sure I understood the pros and cons to include the direction we should take to ensure I received deferred adjudication. Each time I was given a court date he was present and ready to go. Joe Gonzales met with the DA's office and negotiated the best deal for me. During the whole process I trusted Joe and he had my best interest at heart. Joe keeps you informed and he cares more about the client and the outcome. I appreciate all that Joe did for me and my family, he is one of the best attorney's in San Antonio. Thank you Joe for everything......your more than an attorney your a friend!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Antonio, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
