Thorough preparation and attention to detail

Only leaving a 1 star review because I can't leave a 0 star review. James sucked the retainer dry in no time with no work to show for it and asked for it to be refilled multiple times with no progress. I ended up firing James because he couldn't write in clear concise words. After firing James I was able to settle my case in 2 days while representing myself. Do yourself a favor, read the reviews and find a more reputable attorney.

I was going to hire James for an issue and I showed up twice to his office. After waiting 20 minutes the first times I was told we were going to have to reschedule. (thanks for giving me a heads up before i took time off work to show up). The second time a week later I waited a half hour before he showed up to a scheduled appt. During the meeting I felt he was arrogant and was more interested on his phone than my issue so I opted not to use him. He just didnt impress me.

Want everyone to know that everything below is factual no exaggeration. I live in South Carolina and my ex-wife serve me with papers for back child support. And I legitimately owed her some. I knew I needed good representation so I Googled attorney in San Antonio James Warner name popped up so I called him. On the phone he was very convincing to use him he needed a retainer of $3,500 and was kind enough to let me send him 2000 immediately and the balance of 1500 within 2 weeks. I felt so much better after talking to him and we set a date to come to his office. My family and I drove 1250 miles and we were a half hour early to our appointment. Can you we have an appointment at 4 and finally came out at 5 to tell us we were going to have to reschedule for the next day as he had to be in court. No big deal we were in town for a few days. Finally the next day we went everything. His paralegal at the time and mind you he went through three paralegals during our 6-month relationships, seemed more knowledgeable than him. Anyway we got a game plan together and scheduled a court date for July 25th which was a Wednesday about a month away. He told me together all the information we have to include all of my tax records. We sent a bunch of stuff via email and brought all our tax records with us. We had an appointment to meet that Monday prior to our court date. During that month every time we had a question it would take for 4 phone calls to get a return phone call. A week prior to our court date I absolutely could not get a hold of them and we drove 1260 miles to be at his office that Monday for him to tell us that he needed more time to digest all our stuff tax records excetera. So he filed a continuance. A wasted trip! so he followed a continuance a wasted trip. A new court date was set for September time frame so again as we gathered more stuff or had any questions we had to make 4 to 5 phone calls to get a return call. A couple weeks prior to our court date I would start getting more phone calls from him as he was obviously working on our stuff and every time he talked to you you would feel belittled. He wouldn't talk to you he will talk down to you. Finally something came up can't remember exactly but a continuance had to be filed and our new court date was in December. Couple weeks prior to our court date James calls us to let us know that we had to seek further representation he felt since our opponent attorney was a female that I needed a female to represent me and recommended me to to an attorney in his same building which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. After he sucked $5,000 out of us he booted us to someone else. As clients we have the right to get an itemized invoice or Bill to this day I have yet to receive. Every time I would call him he would tell me he would email it to me when he would get back to the office finally he quit taking my calls. Whether he is a good attorney or not I don't know we never went to court all I know is that he went through three paralegals during our 6-month time frame and from what I could tell was very disorganized. Maybe he had too much on his plate I don't know but I would absolutely wholeheartedly not recommend him to anybody. James Warner I hope you read this because there is no way you can deny any of the above. Anybody want to hire him email me at

I met with Mr Warner through a friend that said he was excellent. He was completely full of himself and acted like he didn't want to listen. He cut me off several times and really was rude.

We were desperate and needed someone that would hear our small voice in a huge system. Mr. Gonzales came highly recommended. The professional staff helped us secure an appointment immediately. After our consultation, we knew this was the place for us and hired him on the spot. Mr. Gonzales is professional, personable, knowledgeable, honest, caring and helpful. He gave us his contact number and made himself available 24/7. Any time I contacted him, I always received a return call or message without delay. If he was not available for any reason, we would still receive a return call or message from attorney Christian Henricksen. These two attorneys are a true DREAM TEAM. He exceeded our expectations. He is not just an awesome attorney, he is an awesome person. If you have found yourself or a family member in need of an attorney, Mr. Gonzales comes with the highest of recommendations. Thank you for everything Mr. Gonzales.

I was referred to Mr. Joe Gonzales by a law enforcement colleague who had dealt with him several times while working cases at the DA’s office. I was given Mr. Gonzales’s cell number and calling him was the best decision I had ever made. My initial meeting and impression of Mr. Gonzales was that he was a professional and he listened attentively while I explained what had occurred that led up to my arrest and charge. He understood that I could not accept anything but a dismissal or an acquittal or I would lose my career and future goals. He advised me that he would be working with a team that included Mr. Christian Henrickson and that I would be getting two lawyers for the price of one. I struggled emotionally through a year and a half of court dates until the case went to trial. Despite all my fears, Mr. Gonzales and his team reassured me and I knew they believed in my innocence. When Mr. Gonzales goes into “trial mode” it’s amazing. His cross examinations of the prosecution’s witnesses and complainant were direct and strategically effective. The trial was very stressful for me and as we were waiting for the jury to return with their verdict after deliberation I will never forget how terrified I was and how Mr. Gonzales calmingly placed his hand on mine and smiled and said, “Do not lose your faith now.” He was confident until the very end and even when I had feared the worst he believed in my case. The jury came back very quickly with a unanimous decision and acquitted me of the charge. I will never forget what I went through to fight for the truth and I will never forget how hard Mr. Gonzales and his team fought for me. They were amazing and I felt so blessed to have them fighting in my corner. Joe, from the bottom of my heart I want thank you and will never forget what you did. I would recommend Joe Gonzales to anyone who needs a lawyer because I truly believe and know from experience that he and his team are the best lawyers a person can have. His integrity, experience, and knowledge are assets for anyone who needs a professional lawyer to fight for their case. I would highly recommend him!

I was very concerned about what attorney would represent me. I wanted and attorney that would they be fair and understanding to my case. I was driving up IH35 and saw a billboard with Joe Gonzales picture and phone number. I decided at this time I would like to schedule a meeting with him to discuss my case. My first meeting with Joe was professional and honest, he allowed me to discuss my side of the story without judgement. He listened attentively and made sure I understood the pros and cons to include the direction we should take to ensure I received deferred adjudication. Each time I was given a court date he was present and ready to go. Joe Gonzales met with the DA's office and negotiated the best deal for me. During the whole process I trusted Joe and he had my best interest at heart. Joe keeps you informed and he cares more about the client and the outcome. I appreciate all that Joe did for me and my family, he is one of the best attorney's in San Antonio. Thank you Joe for everything......your more than an attorney your a friend!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Antonio, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
