Cons

Concerns about billing practices and potential overcharging

4
Instances of unsatisfactory performance or perceived lack of effort in certain cases
“They did NOTHING to help me. They will smile and talk sweetly and politely. They are incredibly smart, but in the sense that they will take everything you have and leave you with no peace of mind.”
5
Concerns about the firm's recommendation of certain experts or witnesses, which did not always lead to the desired outcome
“The person they recommended for an expert witness was demoted to a regular witness. The test they recommended for my ex to take to prove up his guilt has never been approved in case law admissible in court.”

The theme of Ms. Vance's Firm is compassion. As an employee, I am behind the scenes. It was the day before the Final Hearing, and I still needed to complete the Exhibits. I had also failed to do a transcript notebook that was needed for Final Hearing. The truth be told, I was at rock bottom, my husband had just abandoned the children and I. During this time, Ms. Vance hugged me as I cried my eyes out. The compassion at The Law Office of Lisa A. Vance is astounding. I will never forget that moment of compassion during the mist of trial preparation and stress. Lastly, thank you to Ms. Sampson for working on my Divorce. I was able to get more money than the standard child support do to her due diligence to advocate for the children and I. It is a true honor to work at the Law Office of Lisa.A. Vance. I will always be thankful for the employment opportunity along with the Firm's extended hand to help my bleeding family. 🙏

Absolutely recommend getting a consultation from Lisa if you need a family lawyer. We have been fighting for custody to protect my special needs son and she listened to us and took the time to guide us in the right direction. We have zero experience in the law field and to have such a kind person talk to us was the hope we needed today. She and her team also loved my daughter and gave her a tour of their rabbit enclosure as well as snacks and books to keep her occupied. I really appreciate everything Lisa. 🥹🥹🥹

This firm went ABOVE and BEYOND with my case! I went to them to simply enforce my visitations to see my son. Long story short, I won sole custody of my son! I will ALWAYS be grateful to Lisa and departed Pacheco. They went to bat for my son who was in a crippling situation. Now he is safe and THRIVING! Thank you Lisa and Partners for actually CARING! They are worth every cent!

I found Lisa Vance law office on a site that claimed Lisa was the best in the family law arena. I requested a consultation ($200-250) for my husband as he was going through his own custody battle. In 2022, I had to hire Lisa as my lawyer because the custodial parent filed three protective orders (family violence) against me with the believed intent to disrupt my relationship, family unit, career, and financial wellbeing. Since Lisa's office was familiar with my case, she accepted me and I've been working with her team and her to fight these false allegations. My original retainer ($7500) was used to meet with the paralegal and Lisa to go over all my evidence, documents, my responses and anything that would go into my client file to be used in the hearing. The hearings never happened because the plaintiff kept postponing. The retainer lasted about 9 months before the next round of payments for updating client file, speaking with paralegal, and filing motions to dismiss and sanctions. Additional funds also were used to file 3 requests for discovery (Request for Production, Request for Admission, and Request for Interrogatories). I'm currently waiting for plaintiff to respond so we can continue the case and near the end of this nightmare. If you're going through something similar, know that Lisa is aggressive and will fight for you the way you want her to, especially when you can provide proof of your innocence. Also know that her expertise in family law will be reflected in her confidence in the court, when she's working with judges, and in the invoices. Before the year is over, I will have paid over $11,000 to defend my name. Her team is extremely compassionate and caring, they work with you in answering questions, and will call you to see how you're doing when in the hospital. If you're willing to go the extra mile and pay the extra dollar, Lisa will be the one you want on your side. She's the one that embarrasses other attorneys who come at you sideways and incorrect. I'm praying this case ends successfully. Thank you Lisa and Team ♥️🐇

Deborah was our lawyer and she was extremely helpful in helping us understand and navigate the family court system. Lisa litigated our case and she did an amazing job addressing the court and the judge and getting across what we felt was most important to address about our case. We initially felt as though we were spending more money than we would have liked. Then we saw the difference in representation from the opposing counsel and we were satisfied with how much we spent and the quality of our representation. We are very impressed and thankful and would recommend this firm to anyone going through a custody battle. Though results are really up to the ruling of a judge, we were able to get everything we asked for and more. Even if things had not gone in our favor, I can confidently say that this team did everything in their power to support us and I would still be satisfied with their representation regardless or results. We felt taken care of as clients.

We were desperate and needed someone that would hear our small voice in a huge system. Mr. Gonzales came highly recommended. The professional staff helped us secure an appointment immediately. After our consultation, we knew this was the place for us and hired him on the spot. Mr. Gonzales is professional, personable, knowledgeable, honest, caring and helpful. He gave us his contact number and made himself available 24/7. Any time I contacted him, I always received a return call or message without delay. If he was not available for any reason, we would still receive a return call or message from attorney Christian Henricksen. These two attorneys are a true DREAM TEAM. He exceeded our expectations. He is not just an awesome attorney, he is an awesome person. If you have found yourself or a family member in need of an attorney, Mr. Gonzales comes with the highest of recommendations. Thank you for everything Mr. Gonzales.

I was referred to Mr. Joe Gonzales by a law enforcement colleague who had dealt with him several times while working cases at the DA’s office. I was given Mr. Gonzales’s cell number and calling him was the best decision I had ever made. My initial meeting and impression of Mr. Gonzales was that he was a professional and he listened attentively while I explained what had occurred that led up to my arrest and charge. He understood that I could not accept anything but a dismissal or an acquittal or I would lose my career and future goals. He advised me that he would be working with a team that included Mr. Christian Henrickson and that I would be getting two lawyers for the price of one. I struggled emotionally through a year and a half of court dates until the case went to trial. Despite all my fears, Mr. Gonzales and his team reassured me and I knew they believed in my innocence. When Mr. Gonzales goes into “trial mode” it’s amazing. His cross examinations of the prosecution’s witnesses and complainant were direct and strategically effective. The trial was very stressful for me and as we were waiting for the jury to return with their verdict after deliberation I will never forget how terrified I was and how Mr. Gonzales calmingly placed his hand on mine and smiled and said, “Do not lose your faith now.” He was confident until the very end and even when I had feared the worst he believed in my case. The jury came back very quickly with a unanimous decision and acquitted me of the charge. I will never forget what I went through to fight for the truth and I will never forget how hard Mr. Gonzales and his team fought for me. They were amazing and I felt so blessed to have them fighting in my corner. Joe, from the bottom of my heart I want thank you and will never forget what you did. I would recommend Joe Gonzales to anyone who needs a lawyer because I truly believe and know from experience that he and his team are the best lawyers a person can have. His integrity, experience, and knowledge are assets for anyone who needs a professional lawyer to fight for their case. I would highly recommend him!

I was very concerned about what attorney would represent me. I wanted and attorney that would they be fair and understanding to my case. I was driving up IH35 and saw a billboard with Joe Gonzales picture and phone number. I decided at this time I would like to schedule a meeting with him to discuss my case. My first meeting with Joe was professional and honest, he allowed me to discuss my side of the story without judgement. He listened attentively and made sure I understood the pros and cons to include the direction we should take to ensure I received deferred adjudication. Each time I was given a court date he was present and ready to go. Joe Gonzales met with the DA's office and negotiated the best deal for me. During the whole process I trusted Joe and he had my best interest at heart. Joe keeps you informed and he cares more about the client and the outcome. I appreciate all that Joe did for me and my family, he is one of the best attorney's in San Antonio. Thank you Joe for everything......your more than an attorney your a friend!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Antonio, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
