I hired Jane and Stephanie Hoppas when it became clear that I needed lawyers who were experienced in high net worth and extremely complicated divorces. I hired them after 2+ years of sheer torture with my ex husband’s revolving carousel of attorney (s). 13 in total! There has not been one moment that I doubted either one of these ladies. If you do decide to hire Jane or Stephanie do yourself a favor and do as they suggest. Jane is very tough but listens to her clients. She will always tell you the truth even when it is unpleasant. If this happens she will also give you options or possible outcomes to prepare you for anything. I never felt alone or lost with Jane. Trust is extremely important so do not withhold important information. They will be the best advocate you could ever dream of. Jane has worked tirelessly for me. You deserve a brilliant attorney and that’s what you will get.

Jane came highly recommended to me and did not disappoint. She is extremely knowledgeable, very professional, and also honest in her appraisal of the case and what she can do for you. You definitely want Jane to be your advocate. She has a full command of the law but is also empathetic. She is highly respected and other attorneys have a healthy fear of her and her abilities. She made my divorce go smoothly despite many obstacles thrown our way by the opposing counsel. I am very grateful to have had her guide and represent me through this life changing event.

Jane was referred to me after I was forced to find another attorney from a failed 6 month collaborative approach. Jane's knowledge and competency in the law is second to none. A true expert in every sense of the word. She is tenacious but professional. Exactly what I needed with an unstable situation. Jane is the epitome of excellence and I would not hesitate to whole heartedly recommend her, especially with difficult divorces. She is hands down the very BEST at what she does.

Jane says she wants to be your last attorney, and she does just that. When there is a messy and contentious child custody issue, she brings clarity. She has a full Command of the rules, and what makes the most common sense. We tried another attorney who was a wonderful Person, but did not have the skills to sort out the anger and psychological issues on the part of the other parent. Also the other parent went through five attorneys because four of them asked to be relieved of the case due to the lack of cooperation by the other parent. Despite the ever-changing attorneys, Jane brought the matter to conclusion and secured the best for the child. Her skills in wrangling complex and perplexing issues was the key to establishing court ordered rules of communication and visits by the other parent which must be supervised by professionals. Unfortunately, some people are just not suited to being a parent, and treat their child as a possession. When there is no cure for a parent Like that, it is best to have Jane find a legal way to bring a peaceful way forward so a kid can grow up in as normal a situation as possible. Thank you, Jane! You helped my grandaughter and son so much!

Let me be clear, Jane is the best divorce attorney in San Antonio. Hands down the BEST attorney in San Antonio. The best decision I ever made. I was told by a colleague she was the best and she exceeded those expectations 10 fold. Her team is incredible. Kimmie and Mel are exceptional at what they do. They helped guide me through a divorce with an unstable now ex-spouse, who had a dysfunctional attorney to add to the chaos. First Kimmie and Mel are so on top of things, they make all other counsel look like amateurs. It’s spectacular to watch. Second when I say Jane is the best, you have to witness her in action. She understands the process, has an exceptional memory, and will be your advocate - helping you all the way. Even when you are your own enemy. I felt so ashamed to witness my exe’s intentions through this divorce process. I also felt so proud to have Jane as my attorney. The respect she has from the Judges, all other attorneys, as well as court staff was the true testament. Judges love and respect her, other attorneys fear and respect her. It was absolutely impressive. 3 examples 1. Jane had my exes 2 lawyers (I repeat 2 lawyers) shuffling through legal books as Jane recites some laws as to why they were wrong. Basically, opponent counsel needed a whole team to keep up. Exe even had an attorney quite on her case. 2. She comes prepared, I mean prepared. Has everything ready, while other counsel is shuffling to keep up. 3. This is best example, Jane and I were having lunch near courthouse, and a court employee bought our lunch, he bought our lunch because Jane helped him in past, what a testament.

We were desperate and needed someone that would hear our small voice in a huge system. Mr. Gonzales came highly recommended. The professional staff helped us secure an appointment immediately. After our consultation, we knew this was the place for us and hired him on the spot. Mr. Gonzales is professional, personable, knowledgeable, honest, caring and helpful. He gave us his contact number and made himself available 24/7. Any time I contacted him, I always received a return call or message without delay. If he was not available for any reason, we would still receive a return call or message from attorney Christian Henricksen. These two attorneys are a true DREAM TEAM. He exceeded our expectations. He is not just an awesome attorney, he is an awesome person. If you have found yourself or a family member in need of an attorney, Mr. Gonzales comes with the highest of recommendations. Thank you for everything Mr. Gonzales.

I was referred to Mr. Joe Gonzales by a law enforcement colleague who had dealt with him several times while working cases at the DA’s office. I was given Mr. Gonzales’s cell number and calling him was the best decision I had ever made. My initial meeting and impression of Mr. Gonzales was that he was a professional and he listened attentively while I explained what had occurred that led up to my arrest and charge. He understood that I could not accept anything but a dismissal or an acquittal or I would lose my career and future goals. He advised me that he would be working with a team that included Mr. Christian Henrickson and that I would be getting two lawyers for the price of one. I struggled emotionally through a year and a half of court dates until the case went to trial. Despite all my fears, Mr. Gonzales and his team reassured me and I knew they believed in my innocence. When Mr. Gonzales goes into “trial mode” it’s amazing. His cross examinations of the prosecution’s witnesses and complainant were direct and strategically effective. The trial was very stressful for me and as we were waiting for the jury to return with their verdict after deliberation I will never forget how terrified I was and how Mr. Gonzales calmingly placed his hand on mine and smiled and said, “Do not lose your faith now.” He was confident until the very end and even when I had feared the worst he believed in my case. The jury came back very quickly with a unanimous decision and acquitted me of the charge. I will never forget what I went through to fight for the truth and I will never forget how hard Mr. Gonzales and his team fought for me. They were amazing and I felt so blessed to have them fighting in my corner. Joe, from the bottom of my heart I want thank you and will never forget what you did. I would recommend Joe Gonzales to anyone who needs a lawyer because I truly believe and know from experience that he and his team are the best lawyers a person can have. His integrity, experience, and knowledge are assets for anyone who needs a professional lawyer to fight for their case. I would highly recommend him!

I was very concerned about what attorney would represent me. I wanted and attorney that would they be fair and understanding to my case. I was driving up IH35 and saw a billboard with Joe Gonzales picture and phone number. I decided at this time I would like to schedule a meeting with him to discuss my case. My first meeting with Joe was professional and honest, he allowed me to discuss my side of the story without judgement. He listened attentively and made sure I understood the pros and cons to include the direction we should take to ensure I received deferred adjudication. Each time I was given a court date he was present and ready to go. Joe Gonzales met with the DA's office and negotiated the best deal for me. During the whole process I trusted Joe and he had my best interest at heart. Joe keeps you informed and he cares more about the client and the outcome. I appreciate all that Joe did for me and my family, he is one of the best attorney's in San Antonio. Thank you Joe for everything......your more than an attorney your a friend!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of San Antonio, Texas?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
