I can't say enough good things about Brenda and her assistant Amy. I first met with Brenda when I was still in shock after my ex-husband left our family via text for his mistress. I interviewed several attorneys and immediately felt the most comfortable with Brenda. While I wasn't ready to file at that time, I was so grateful for her support and advice. A couple months later I did file for divorce and I couldn't have asked for better service. She is an excellent communicator and advocate. She answered questions/emails quickly and billing was transparent. She always made sure I was well prepared and understood every step of the process and exactly what to expect. I felt overwhelmed at some points, but always knew what I needed to do next. She helped me achieve the best possible outcome for myself and my kids. She also provided excellent advice when I needed the help of our local police department to stop my husband's girlfriend's harassment of me and my son. Truly she was part legal counsel and part counselor. I never thought I would find myself going through a divorce, but I couldn't have been in better hands. Don't hesitate to hire Brenda!

I originally hired a divorce attorney out of Salt Lake City where I live. He seemed smart and I figured he was similar to most attorneys and would do a great job. Long story short, I fired him. He was not a good advocate, a very poor communicator and I was being taken. A friend of mine recommended Brenda Beaton, she is based out of Ogden, but well worth the drive. However, I needed a "great" attorney, so I interviewed and hired her that day. Brenda is a take charge attorney. She is intelligent, knows the law, and fought hard for me. She communicated everything she was doing and would always reply if I had questions or concerns. I highly recommend hiring Brenda.

My career has always included dealing with diverse types of people. In these roles I have learned how important listening is and asking the right questions vs. a lot of meaningless questions. Brenda treated me the way I always try to treat my customers, with empathy and respect. Because she listened so well she was able to give me great advise and work through my legal issues in as painless a manner as possible.

Brenda was an amazing asset to have in my case. She lives and breathes her work to do the best job possible for her clients. She works tirelessly to give the best possible advice. She was prepared, knowledgeable, and pursued our desired outcome in a professional manner. I was so glad to have her with me at court. I can't recommend her highly enough.

Lindy attorney handled my personal injury lawsuit where I was not at fault. When the car accident occurred, I contacted attorneys I knew through my line of work for a referral, and multiple attorneys referred me to Lindy and said she was a bulldog. That proved true. Don’t call someone from a sign, because they don’t have the experience and you’d only be a statistic to them. Lindy educates the client on their options, directs them correctly, and handles everything on the back end to relieve all the stress. The day I retained her, the insurance companies were no longer allowed to hassle me. She is the legal shield and knows what she is doing. In my dicusssions with her, she seems to have more knowledge about personal injury than some doctors! She exemplifies fill confidence and is also a good trial attorney. While being in the middle of an overwhelming situation, any personal injury client of Lindy’s is going to completely taken care of. Because of Lindy’s expertise, her ability to make the client feel entirely comfortable, and her strength in dealing with both the car insurance companies and the medical insurance companies, I would confidently put Lindy up for being the legal counsel for any personal injury client. I’m sure that her non-personal injury clients would feel the same.

I went through a very tough custody battle and had to deal with my spouse trying to make me sell our home, Jon was there every step of the way! Answered all email and calls when I had an emergency. He was very good in court telling the commissioner about everything. His way of dealing with court helped us get everything we wanted up front and easy for the commissioner to see. I got 50/50 custody and was able to keep the marital home thanks to Jonathon. He is awesome!!

I obtained Jonathan Felt as counsel for a guardianship matter. Not only did Jonathan work relentlessly on my case, but he also went the extra mile in keeping me informed as to changes and developments. I found him to be easy to contact and we had several discussions about what I could expect and what was the best thing for the case. Jonathan is honest, trustworthy, and I couldn't have been more pleased with his performance. I recommend him highly.

Hailey put up a good fight in my defense. She went as far as visiting me in jail after being defeated...not by her faults..but my own. I would highly recommend Hailey to anyone. She really cares and knows what she is doing in a courtroom.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Ogden, Utah?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
