“He helped guide me through every step and was always responsive. Even after my divorce when issues have arisen, Charles continued to give me excellent guidance.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and responsiveness
“Was horrible. Impossible to get a hold of. Did no research for our case. Did not get things for court that were asked for so we could see them and be prepared.”
2
Ineffective representation and poor performance
“Over billed incorrectly for way more than the work he actually did. Didn't even have correct information in his arguments. Sat at the desk with his head down most of the time and didn't seem to care.”
3
Failure to achieve desired outcomes
“If he did things in a good time frame and knew what he was doing we might have had a different outcome. Instead he billed for thousands of dollars and didn't really do anything with no difference in outcome even with a great case.”

Negotiating the family court system is something i never wanted to do. I can’t imagine anyone being prepared for such a gut wrenching experience. With that being said Charles Ahlstrom helped me through the process and guided me to put my best foot forward at every step. I would recommend Charles to anyone needing a great lawyer to help through such a painful time. Charles was always upfront with me on my position. My situation turned out good and that’s pretty great considering it was divorce and custody case. I was very grateful to have Charles with me through the courts Charles and Kellie make a great team and work together to supply answers and put some of the tension at ease. I sympathize with anyone going through family courts but it’s important to be going in with someone you can trust.

Our case was given to Mr. Ahlstrom when our previous lawyer passed & this turned out to be the biggest mistake of our lives!! He called us 3 days before our court date & asked why we hadn't sent him a response to the documents that he sent us regarding the upcoming court date....we didn't received said documents until after he called us asking why we hadn't responded to them. The stack of documents he sent us (3 days before court) were as thick as an Ogden phone book & then he said that he needed us to write a response to this stack of documents by the next morning so that he could file it with the court in time! My wife sat up until 4am writing our response to said documents & sent our response to Charles. We were then charged several hundred dollars for his paralegal to type our response verbatim what my wife had written!! We ultimately lost custody & thousands of dollars to Mr. Ahlstrom...who literally did nothing he said he was going to do!! Worst experience with a lawyer ever!

I am a current client of Charles. My niece is going through a hard time with an adoption overturned. We are lucky to have Charles and Kellie at Sentinell. We are waiting patiently and working towards an outcome that we have faith will be in our favor. We appreciate all their hard work and assistance during this time.

I had the privilege of having Charles represent me during my divorce. During one of the most difficult periods of my life, not only did Charles provide excellent legal advice - but he cared for me on a personal level. He helped guide me through every step and was always responsive. Even after my divorce when issues have arisen, Charles continued to give me excellent guidance. I not only consider him an excellent attorney, but a wise friend. If you need an amazing attorney, I can't recommend Charles highly enough. I would recommend Charles and Sentinel Law Group to any family or friend needing legal representation.

I have had the good fortune of having Sentinel Law Group (specifically Charles Ahlstrom) represent me and my family twice in my lifetime. A member of my family unfortunately found themselves in trouble with the law and we were at loss of what to do or where to turn for help. We were most fortunate that we were directed to Charles and his team. He was effective, relentless and extremely caring in representing us in our time of need. Unlike some attorneys that I have dealt with in the past, his first priority was my child’s welfare and future and not his fee! Money was not his priority. Solving our legal problem was his only concern! His price was fair and reasonable but not his main motivation. Helping us was his only concern! He truly cared about US and not his pocketbook! We are most grateful for all that he has done for us with his personal concern and guidance! He has become more than our attorney! Charles is our friend! That is why when we decided to hire an estate planner, it was an easy decision! Charles Ahlstrom and Sentinel Law Group! They are the best!

Lindy attorney handled my personal injury lawsuit where I was not at fault. When the car accident occurred, I contacted attorneys I knew through my line of work for a referral, and multiple attorneys referred me to Lindy and said she was a bulldog. That proved true. Don’t call someone from a sign, because they don’t have the experience and you’d only be a statistic to them. Lindy educates the client on their options, directs them correctly, and handles everything on the back end to relieve all the stress. The day I retained her, the insurance companies were no longer allowed to hassle me. She is the legal shield and knows what she is doing. In my dicusssions with her, she seems to have more knowledge about personal injury than some doctors! She exemplifies fill confidence and is also a good trial attorney. While being in the middle of an overwhelming situation, any personal injury client of Lindy’s is going to completely taken care of. Because of Lindy’s expertise, her ability to make the client feel entirely comfortable, and her strength in dealing with both the car insurance companies and the medical insurance companies, I would confidently put Lindy up for being the legal counsel for any personal injury client. I’m sure that her non-personal injury clients would feel the same.

I went through a very tough custody battle and had to deal with my spouse trying to make me sell our home, Jon was there every step of the way! Answered all email and calls when I had an emergency. He was very good in court telling the commissioner about everything. His way of dealing with court helped us get everything we wanted up front and easy for the commissioner to see. I got 50/50 custody and was able to keep the marital home thanks to Jonathon. He is awesome!!

I obtained Jonathan Felt as counsel for a guardianship matter. Not only did Jonathan work relentlessly on my case, but he also went the extra mile in keeping me informed as to changes and developments. I found him to be easy to contact and we had several discussions about what I could expect and what was the best thing for the case. Jonathan is honest, trustworthy, and I couldn't have been more pleased with his performance. I recommend him highly.

Hailey put up a good fight in my defense. She went as far as visiting me in jail after being defeated...not by her faults..but my own. I would highly recommend Hailey to anyone. She really cares and knows what she is doing in a courtroom.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Ogden, Utah?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
