Lack of responsiveness and communication from the firm, with clients feeling their inquiries were not addressed in a timely manner

I was fighting a case against DCFS for neglect when I came across Troy as I was searching for an attorney to represent me. I met with several attorneys before choosing Troy, and the majority would not take on my case as it deals with DCFS. Troy was not hesitant, he let me know he could not guarantee what the outcome would be, but if we did not fight it, we would never know the outcome. I am not disappointed at all. He went above and beyond, he was well prepared at both hearings. He knew exactly what he was doing, and if he didn’t well he still pretended like he did. He was able to get my DCFS case overturned successfully. Sarah who he works with is also very good and kept me informed of every step of the way as they came aware of it. I do not regret hiring Troy to represent me. I would recommend him if you need a good attorney for any situation that you can fully trust.

We are very disappointed in Burton Family Law Firm! The only reason we're giving them a 1 star review is because 0 stars isn't an option. Everytime we attempted to reach out to our lawyer about our case we would not get a response back in a timely manner or at all, and when they finally did respond it was usually the paralegal that would get back to us saying they have no updates, then we would get charged for every email and phone call inquiry, so we learned to not ask about our case and let the coparent get away with a lot. When the case finally closed, we never heard from our lawyer or the firm saying thank you for working with us or goodbye. We had to contact them a month after the case closed to finally get our retainer back. If you want to waste your time, money, potentially your case, and not feel valued, then Burton Law Firm is the way to go! It's sad that it felt like they prioritized other clients over our case that was tough and time sentive, but was just as important to us.

At the time I hired Paul, I was two years into a divorce that was costing me a ton of money and going no where. Paul took my case and helped bring it to a conclusion in a expeditious and professional manner that helped save me money and my sanity! Paul was fantastic to work with and I really felt like he had my best interest in mind. I could not be more grateful to both he and his assistant Shaylee for the great work they did! I would absolutely recommend him.

I am in the Air Force and stationed overseas. Through some shady dealings my daughter was forced to stay behind in the states with my ex wife. A couple of months after i left the country my ex ended up in alcohol rehab. Because of my military status and living overseas I had a short window of time to gain custody of my daughter. Paul seemingly to me dropped everything and helped me out because of the compressed time frame. I ended up with custody of my daughter and still have her safe with me to this day. I couldn't have asked for better, more personalized service than what Paul gave me.

I can't recommend Paul highly enough. He represented me in my divorce and went above and beyond my expectations. His fee was extremely reasonable, and I've recommended him to friends and family who needed legal representation.

My family and I were lost with our immigration issues. We had used attorneys before but did not have good experiences. On a whim after a google search, we found Dan and went in not knowing quite what to expect as attorneys had failed us before. After speaking with him for a single meeting we knew that he was a much higher caliber of person and we began to have hope again. He is knowledgeable, caring, and professional. He made sure to take the necessary time and efforts to understand the entire case, something that we could get out of nobody else. He worked so hard for us and he fought harder! When it came time for court he was prepared and flexible. He always took the time to answer any questions or quell any concerns. I would highly recommend Daniel Black to anybody needing help. I don't know how to say thank you enough.

I have never had an experience with an attorney who actually looked at me as a person. Mr. Black treated me with respect, and considering what I was up against, no one else would. I had been charged with several protective order violations, DV assault, theft, and vehicle burglary. I can already see whoever is reading this is thinking exactly what everyone else did. Mr. Black, however, listened to my story and handled my cases as though he were a seasoned professional. Anyway, Long story short, I was convicted of 1 protective order violation from sending a text message, and 1 class B attempted assault. The circumstances were completely against me and my civil rights were repeatedly violated. Mr Black, thank you for all you helped me with and for working so hard on my cases. And for treating me with respect.

I went through a very tough custody battle and had to deal with my spouse trying to make me sell our home, Jon was there every step of the way! Answered all email and calls when I had an emergency. He was very good in court telling the commissioner about everything. His way of dealing with court helped us get everything we wanted up front and easy for the commissioner to see. I got 50/50 custody and was able to keep the marital home thanks to Jonathon. He is awesome!!

I obtained Jonathan Felt as counsel for a guardianship matter. Not only did Jonathan work relentlessly on my case, but he also went the extra mile in keeping me informed as to changes and developments. I found him to be easy to contact and we had several discussions about what I could expect and what was the best thing for the case. Jonathan is honest, trustworthy, and I couldn't have been more pleased with his performance. I recommend him highly.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Ogden, Utah?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
