Cons
1
Can lack the tenacity and aggressiveness needed to effectively fight for the client's case
“From the consultation to the close finish, Mr. Backman was friendly, confident, patient and reassuring. I feel he lacked the tenacity to cross the finish line. He is a very nice person. Sometimes nice doesnt get the job done.”
2

“As matter in fact he doesn't know his job well and the points that he should argue ,forgets and tells stories about what happened 70 years ago in such and such court. In my case everything was obviously clear and open , but never did mention the main articles that we were fighting for.”

My mother has used Scott for a long time and never had much of an issue, HOWEVER...I retained him in January of 2023 for a child protective order I had filed on behalf of my son against my ex, and in court, despite the overwhelming evidence, he more or less just sat there and did nothing which allowed my ex to get it dismissed. Fast forward to now (December 2023) and I have filed to gain full custody of my son, called Scott again more due to history to see if he'd be willing to take the case, said he would but we'd need to get the hearing date changed due to him not being available that day, ok that's fine, we also had a verbal agreement between us directly that he was willing to wait on payment for retainer so we could get the money, but he would start on everything right away, upon attempting 3 DIFFERENT TIMES to come in and sign the retention paperwork, I was turned away by paralegals that "needed to talk to him first" about what? I made the agreement with him, not with a paralegal. Finally was able to come in to sign the papers, but I was told by Josie that he "needed everything up front first" 100% contrary to what we agreed to, and that "HE was the one who said it" yet refused to ask him with me standing there to confirm, as he came out of his office and saw me sitting there, and to this day still have not gotten a return email or phone call to confirm or deny any of this Like others have said, if you want to not be jerked around by this firm, then don't bother even talking to them, and they've missed out on a retainer and a guaranteed case win that would bolster their reputation Oh well 🤷‍♂️

Scott did help me with my divorce case, but when it came to needing follow up done he sent a letter to my ex and pretty much told me I was on my own to fill the paperwork out, but charged me 300 for what! sending a letter!!! He wouldn't continue helping me with my case but charged me anyways. Sounds like a waste of money to me! Sad Just make sure he likes you and maybe he will finish the case.

The worst. Scott says on his bio on the site that he understands it's a difficult time he got mad at me because I cried and emotional in a mad way over the way things were going and I would ask him what would we do if my ex went with a custody evaluation and he wouldn't answer me except to say "You're getting ahead of yourself he won't do it" guess whaaattt. We have been going through one and are close to the end but he dropped my case because I angary cried. If you want to know any or all possible out comes. Don't use him

Lindy attorney handled my personal injury lawsuit where I was not at fault. When the car accident occurred, I contacted attorneys I knew through my line of work for a referral, and multiple attorneys referred me to Lindy and said she was a bulldog. That proved true. Don’t call someone from a sign, because they don’t have the experience and you’d only be a statistic to them. Lindy educates the client on their options, directs them correctly, and handles everything on the back end to relieve all the stress. The day I retained her, the insurance companies were no longer allowed to hassle me. She is the legal shield and knows what she is doing. In my dicusssions with her, she seems to have more knowledge about personal injury than some doctors! She exemplifies fill confidence and is also a good trial attorney. While being in the middle of an overwhelming situation, any personal injury client of Lindy’s is going to completely taken care of. Because of Lindy’s expertise, her ability to make the client feel entirely comfortable, and her strength in dealing with both the car insurance companies and the medical insurance companies, I would confidently put Lindy up for being the legal counsel for any personal injury client. I’m sure that her non-personal injury clients would feel the same.

My family and I were lost with our immigration issues. We had used attorneys before but did not have good experiences. On a whim after a google search, we found Dan and went in not knowing quite what to expect as attorneys had failed us before. After speaking with him for a single meeting we knew that he was a much higher caliber of person and we began to have hope again. He is knowledgeable, caring, and professional. He made sure to take the necessary time and efforts to understand the entire case, something that we could get out of nobody else. He worked so hard for us and he fought harder! When it came time for court he was prepared and flexible. He always took the time to answer any questions or quell any concerns. I would highly recommend Daniel Black to anybody needing help. I don't know how to say thank you enough.

I have never had an experience with an attorney who actually looked at me as a person. Mr. Black treated me with respect, and considering what I was up against, no one else would. I had been charged with several protective order violations, DV assault, theft, and vehicle burglary. I can already see whoever is reading this is thinking exactly what everyone else did. Mr. Black, however, listened to my story and handled my cases as though he were a seasoned professional. Anyway, Long story short, I was convicted of 1 protective order violation from sending a text message, and 1 class B attempted assault. The circumstances were completely against me and my civil rights were repeatedly violated. Mr Black, thank you for all you helped me with and for working so hard on my cases. And for treating me with respect.

I went through a very tough custody battle and had to deal with my spouse trying to make me sell our home, Jon was there every step of the way! Answered all email and calls when I had an emergency. He was very good in court telling the commissioner about everything. His way of dealing with court helped us get everything we wanted up front and easy for the commissioner to see. I got 50/50 custody and was able to keep the marital home thanks to Jonathon. He is awesome!!

I obtained Jonathan Felt as counsel for a guardianship matter. Not only did Jonathan work relentlessly on my case, but he also went the extra mile in keeping me informed as to changes and developments. I found him to be easy to contact and we had several discussions about what I could expect and what was the best thing for the case. Jonathan is honest, trustworthy, and I couldn't have been more pleased with his performance. I recommend him highly.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Ogden, Utah?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
