I cannot think of a better team of attorney's representing me in such a complex court battle. I was under a high level of stress fighting for custody and worrying over the outcome with my children. Nate and his team's expertise with the laws and thorough detail of facts in which all documents were presented to the court made it possible for a successful outcome. Nate answered my emails and calls to reassure me of work being done on my case. Watching Nate and Ron in court and how organized they are with all the case documents really show how much time they put into making sure things are done right.

I cannot say enough great things about Nathan. During the course of my custody case, Nathan was always there for my kids and I. He always answers emails, quickly giving honest and speedy responses! Nathan is also extremely knowledgeable in the law. This gave me so much confidence during the course of my very difficult case. When we did have our day in court, Nathan worked tirelessly for days leading up to it, for the benefit of my kids and I to ensure we had our BEST day in court. I’ll never forget the day we finally won our case, Nathan called and congratulated me. I would %110 recommend Nathan Shill to everyone suffering from a difficult divorce or separation and those in an unfortunate custody battle.

I recently sought legal help from Heritage Law for a custody battle that I have been dealing with for 7 years. Nate has assisted in my case recently. Over the years, I have hired several attorneys who have not been very helpful in advocating for me and for my daughter. Nate and his colleagues are amazing. Having Heritage Law on my side is a breath of fresh air. Nate is compassionate, helpful, thorough, ethical, and knowledgeable. His experience in working with custody and child welfare cases has been extremely beneficial in my case. I am absolutely impressed with Nate's work, professionalism, ethics, and skill.

Neil got me out of jail! I was arrested under false pretenses. The police office lied to a judge under oath saying I was a convicted felon and on probation. 100% FALSE. Neil saw the false statement on the affidavit of probable cause and contacted the county attorney who then ordered my release and he also convinced the officials that I did not have to pay any bail. And that no restrictions would be placed upon me. Neil was an answer to my prayer. In a subsequent hearing Neil cross-examined witnesses and did an amazing job in asking questions and cross examination. Later he was able to get the criminal case 100% DISMISSED! Highly recommend.

I have been working with Neil on an employment sexual harassment case for about a year now. I have nothing but good things to say, he isn’t your average scummy lawyer, he truly cares, and works hard and trulyfights for your case! I went through 2 attorneys before finding Neil, so I know he’s one of the rare ones! Trustworthy, smart, dependable and cares! And after research, he isn’t just employment discrimination, he does it all and from what I’ve read thrives in a every area of law he practices! 5 stars NEIL SKOUSEN IS WHO EVERYONE NEEDS ON THEIR CASE!

Hands down, Kenny Christiansen and Mindi Bartlam are a fantastic team. Although my case was complex and trying, they fought and held my hand through every step. Kenny and Mindy are professional and knowledgeable, and they made it feel more personal and considerate of the sensitive nature of our case. Kenny and Mindi have become more than excellent representations; I dare to call them friends.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Orem, Utah?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
