I recently worked with Craig Swapp and Associates, specifically with attorney Matt, and overall, I was satisfied with my experience. Matt was professional, knowledgeable, and always kept me informed throughout the process. He explained everything clearly and responded whenever I had questions or concerns. One thing to note is that the case took longer than I initially expected, especially since it was a straightforward automotive accident. However, I quickly realized that dealing with doctors and auto insurance representatives can really delay things. Despite the longer timeline, Matt remained diligent and focused, making sure my interests were well-represented. I appreciated Matt's dedication and attention to detail. He worked hard to get me the best possible outcome, and his persistence made a big difference. Though the process had its challenges, Matt and the team at Craig Swapp and Associates made it as smooth as possible. I would definitely recommend them to anyone in need of legal assistance. **Make-a-Wish $5 donation activated**

I appreciated all the work Mr. Slaugh went through to see my case through. We hit many road blocks along the way but the end result was what I was looking for. He always answered any questions that I had in a professional way. Thank you for not giving up on me or my case. I would not hesitate to recommend your firm to anyone in need of a sound lawyer.

I wish I could fully convey my thoughts about Scott. Scott took on my case midway through the process when my previous attorney quit my divorce. I found myself in a really bad spot having to find a new attorney that was willing to go to trial with a judge that was not in my favor, and against my ex’s attorney who was free. Scott had good graces knowing that I came from an attorney that honestly loathed him, and he took up my banner in the middle of his heavy case load. I cannot tell you how indebted to him and his team for making the impossible possible. By the time my trial came my case had been completely revamped. His partner Mckail worked diligently on my exhibits for my case and spent the time to really prepare all my witnesses before trial. We walked in to court with a better case than I had in the last year, and Scott’s acumen in the trial was shrewd and well informed. His arguments consistently met with the approval of the judge, and he deftly handled my ex’s attorney when they tried to sneak in testimony that was underhanded. In the end I got what I fought for two years for, my kids and the equal right to be involved in their lives. My children and I are the direct benefactors of Scott’s skills and help. I absolutely give my recommendation to Scott as an attorney worth working with.

Scott Weight is a phenomenal attorney at Esplin & Weight! I first came to him years ago for a divorce. Every experience I've had with him has always been a positive one. He's very knowledgeable and very professional. He's always taken the time to meet with me, listen to the details of my case and has offered helpful instructions to help me navigate through it all. I will definitely think of him first any time I may need counsel and I would definitely recommend him to anyone needing a great attorney!

Kim and I worked together in law school and we have been professional colleagues since then. She worked closely as my mentor while I was on the Moot Court team at BYU Law School. Thanks in part to her good work as my mentor and coach, I took first place in the BYU competition and our team placed in the National Championships in New York City. Kim is smart without being arrogant and knows how to cut to the heart of problems. I would gladly recommend her legal skills and abilities. Her clients are lucky to work with her!

Kimberly helped us set up the right kind of estate plan for our family, and at a great price. She followed a very efficient 3-step process: 1) helped us brainstorm what we wanted, 2) drafted the appropriate documents, and 3) met with us in person throughout the process to answer questions and help us get the kind of estate plan we wanted. This process helped us avoid sinking a ton of time into the planning, and gave us plenty of opportunity to make sure it was arranged just the way our family needed. Very highly recommended!

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Provo, Utah?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
