I wrote a review on Michael Banks back in 2017 when my husband & I originally hired him on a car accident we were involved in. At that time, we already felt like we were getting an awesome attorney but now that we've seem him fight for us, we have NEVER been so confident that we truly have someone else fighting their hardest to help us w/ our best interests in mind!! Today was a big/long/hard/interesting day to say the least but it was also a very emotional & day! I have NEVER before seen an attorney fight so hard & from the heart until today! Michael Banks is the most sincere, honest & understanding attorney/person I have EVER met in my life!! He fights for the innocent little people against the huge insurance companies that like to bully & push people around! Today, Michael Banks showed us EXACTLY what a good, kind, caring & amazing attorney does when his client is being pushed around & intimidated by the opposing big insurance company!! Geico was trying to bully my husband & make him feel like his past was about to alter what he deserves until Mr. Banks stepped in & shut Geico right down! If you need an attorney that honestly cares about you genuinely from his heart, Michael Banks is the ONLY attorney I've ever met/seen actually fight for you & what you need & deserve!! WE THANK YOU, MICHAEL BANKS, FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS FOR JUST BEING YOU!! You are the most amazing, kind & best attorney we've EVER had the pleasure of coming across & dealing with! I completely 1,000% recommend Michael Banks to anyone & everyone that need someone who cares!!

On Wednesday April 12, 2017, my fiance & I had a consultation with Michael Banks regarding a car accident we were involved in back in June 2016. I called Mr. Banks at 3:30pm & explained a little of what happened in the accident. His response was very sincere & he told me the rest of his afternoon was free & he'd love to talk to us in person. We were in his office by 4pm meeting with him personally. Not just a paralegal or assistant... The actual attorney! We also met his assistant Annie & she was just the sweetest thing EVER! They both were very caring, sincere, thorough & wanted to right the way we were wronged! We were not only wronged due to the accident but also by the attorney we previously hired. Mr. Banks was very empathetic & understanding! He felt we had a good case & need less to say, before 5pm we were signing the papers hiring Michael Banks to fight for us! He made us feel like we were very important & we felt like we had ALL his attention on us & what we had to say! We didn't feel rushed, he didn't interrupt us once while we were talking, & he made us feel so confident that he was fighting for us & wanted to fix what someone else messed up. He also made it very clear that we are more than welcome to pop in any time we feel necessary or just want to say hi. Unlike most other attorney's who are arrogant, rush you out, interrupt you & make cold comments! I cannot say enough good things about Michael Banks as an attorney & a person! Then there's Annie... She is such a sweet, understanding, genuine, wonderful woman with a heart of gold! She seems to just have this ora about her that can make anyone feel comfortable with her! I would recommend Michael Banks to absolutely anyone & everyone! Thank you Mr. Banks & Annie for caring & we look forward to working with you!

My company was contacted by a private equity firm who made an unsolicited, written offer for our company. It was a fair price, offered at a time my partner was looking to retire. Our business lawyer recommended Brent Hawkins to represent us through the acquisition. Brent was very expert and insightful and helped negotiate a better agreement and price than had been initially proposed. We’re satisfied nothing was left undone and that we were well represented.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Salt Lake City, Utah?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
