Throughout my entire divorce proceedings, I felt like I had true advocates in my corner with Shane and Becky! From my initial phone call to their office, until receiving my divorce decree, i felt totally comfortable in my choice to retain Marx Family Law! Shane and Becky excel at communication on a level that I’ve never experienced before! Attention to even the most minute of details. Not for one moment did I feel like “just another client”. They were so welcoming, compassionate, and just honest! I cannot recommend strongly enough!

Going through a divorce has been the most stressful thing in my entire life, and it is not something I could have done on my own. Before contacting Shane, I had interviewed several lawyers over the course of a few weeks. By far, I felt the most comfortable with Shane and Kayla. I felt they understood my case better than anyone, and it was clear from the very beginning that they would give 100% to my case. Through the entire process, they responded quickly to emails, were great at giving legal advice, and not only were they extremely professional, but they were also personable and sensitive to my needs during this trying time. I would highly recommend either Shane or Kayla to anyone looking for a lawyer who will fight your battles for you, a lawyer who cares, and a lawyer who will get you the settlement you want. I also love Shannon, their paralegal. She brought positivity to an otherwise trying time, and they all worked together in perfect harmony. I'd hire them again in a heartbeat (and I hope I still get to stay in touch with them!)

I was very fortunate to have Shane recommended to me by a local attorney who could not assist me with my child custody case. From the very first consultation I appreciated Shane's care and insight. Going through the courts can be a heart wrenching experience that keeps you up at night, but Shane's thoughtful, experienced, and personable demeanor inspired confidence and was a great comfort. He listened to my concerns and pursued my case with dedication. As others have stated, he returned calls as soon as he could when he couldn't immediately be reached and Shannon was a great help when Shane was not available. His knowledge of family law is excellent and his approach is very professional and respectful. I would not hesitate to call Shane first should I ever again need legal assistance for family law matters.

When I made the decision to file for divorce, I was nervous and intimidated to meet with a lawyer. Shane was so personable and professional that he quickly calmed my fears. Shane has an amazing amount of empathy and an incredible ability to make anyone feel at ease. I was an emotional wreck while going through my divorce, but he always just listened to my concerns and gave me sound advice. It would have been a very different process if I hadn’t had Shane as my advocate. Shane is an expert in the law. But what he has that I believe is unique, is his genuine care and concern for his clients, and his ability to empathize and understand. He receives my highest recommendation.

My company was contacted by a private equity firm who made an unsolicited, written offer for our company. It was a fair price, offered at a time my partner was looking to retire. Our business lawyer recommended Brent Hawkins to represent us through the acquisition. Brent was very expert and insightful and helped negotiate a better agreement and price than had been initially proposed. We’re satisfied nothing was left undone and that we were well represented.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Salt Lake City, Utah?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
