I came to Jill over two years ago in despair, fear, and sadness during the most vulnerable part of my life. The moment I talked to Jill she made me feel heard, cared for, and protected. Let me tell you that I talked to four more attorneys and no one made me feel as cared for and heard despite my financial situation. The moment Jill said I needed a protective order to keep me and my children safe, I knew from that moment, and with no doubt in my heart, that I was taken care of. Jill is a strong, brilliant, and admirable attorney and when I say she will fight for you, hear me out BECAUSE. SHE. WILL. Jill and her team NEVER gave up on me or my children despite my financial situation. She is simply amazing! If someone is in need of an attorney, let me tell you, this is where you belong, I promise!

When I first met with Jill, my marriage had taken a scary turn. I had no idea what to do. All I knew was that I needed a lawyer, and I needed a good one. After getting two separate recommendations for Jill, I went to her with my case and never looked back. From the beginning, Jill understood my situation, validated my concerns, answered my never-ending questions, and genuinely wanted to help me. At a time when I couldn’t see the way forward, she gave me the confidence to know that I could go through a divorce and land on my feet.   Now I'm on the other side and I couldn't have asked for a better result. Having an attorney that knew her stuff and fought in my corner made all the difference. I can’t imagine going through a divorce with any other lawyer at my side. If you need the best, then you need Jill.

Jill has worked with me both on my divorce and in another matter in the courtroom. She has always been a wonderful advocate for me in expressing my wishes and fighting on my behalf. I have been so thankful for her knowledge and her great talents as a lawyer, as well as her kindness to me. I would hire her again in a second!

Andy took my case on and from day one was very concerned and upset and what had taken place. He really invested in my situation, and not only did he show me he genuinely cared, he spent countless hours, time, money, etc fighting for me when it was a very large city against me. I would have had no chance against them, but instead we had a great outcome and it was all thanks to his perseverance and willingness to fight for me, and to listen to me. He will truly take the time to listen to you and he is so great at what he does, you can trust that no stone will be left unturned and he will not quit until you win.

We have a home and 2 cars and were so worried about filing bankruptcy. Right in the consult Val told me what to expect. He let me know how I could "cram down" the interest rate on my auto loan. He also suggested a loan modification because I was pretty far behind on my payments. I was skeptical but Sherri is truly a loan mod expert. She took care of everything and got us a loan mod which became part of our Chapter 13 plan. Vannova Legal has experts who care. I highly recommend them.

My experience with Vannova Legal was first class. Val handled my consult and put me at ease right away. I have a small business and a home. I had good credit most of my life so I was embarrassed and also afraid of what filing bankruptcy met. Val was patient with me and walked me through all of my options. Misty was my case manager and answered all of my questions about the ton of documents that had to be submitted. I wanted to cry the day I came in to sign and Matt was so non-judgmental and good-natured he had me laughing by the end. Marci took care of me after my case was filed. I can't lie, bankruptcy is a very intrusive and frustrating process, especially dealing with the Chapter 13 Trustee, but everyone that I worked with at Vannova Legal put me at ease and tried to make the process easier for me. The outcome for me was better than expected. I only wish I hadn't waited so long to call. I highly recommend this firm.

My case was in the Pro Se court and Marco recognized that with the intricacies of my case I may be better speaking on my own behalf at that time. He gave me a quick crash course how to address my issues and his advice was right on point! Thanks Marco.

About four years ago I was newly married and had lost my job. On top of losing my job.My driving record was not looking so good. Multiple infractions had piled up against because I was being young, stupid and irresponsible. On a certain day I was taking my truck from one location to another. The registration was expired I had no insurance no drivers license and my break lights were out. Of course I was pulled over and cited for multiple infractions and my truck was impounded. We moved to Texas shortly after the incident. Marco Brown represented me while I was away. My gratitude goes out to him. Because he represented me I now have a good job working at a jail instead of being in one. David. J

Marco Brown Is wonderful. He represented me in my divorce and later in a guardianship case for my daughter turning eighteen who has Autism. I would highly recommend him, especially if you need help with a guardianship for a special needs child. He knew exactly how to help. The process was quick and smooth. The cost was minimal. There was so much that needed done for my child as she was about to become an adult, that having Marco take care of the guardianship gave me complete confidence and peace of mind that it was being done right and within the time frame needed. He and the other individuals in the office are always very professional and helpful. I never called and didn't feel like the immediate priority. They took care of everything. I felt they addressed my needs and were very knowledgable in the processes for both cases. They filed and scheduled everything as needed. Thank you!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sandy, Utah?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
