This review is about my experience with Atty. Spencer Ricks. Let me preface this review by saying that while I was Mr. Rick’s client and a friend asked me for recommendations on a divorce attorney, I referred the opposing counsel instead. At the time they were the only family law attorneys I could speak about. I simply could not recommend Mr. Ricks. If you’re a financially struggling single Mom, save your time and money and look elsewhere. I was/am disappointed with how Mr. Ricks treated me as a client in the middle of a high conflict divorce. At my in-person consult with him, Mr. Ricks laid out a plan on how we were going to proceed. This plan is also in my email. The first step according to the plan was that we would file a motion requesting that the opposing party would start spousal support in my behalf. This was my deciding factor in hiring him. I mean I was a stay at home Mom and had 100% custody of the kids at the time and needed financial support from my estranged husband. A court order for spousal support would have greatly helped, not only with family needs but also with the legal fees. However, to my disappointment, Mr. Ricks never filed any motion. Instead, he changed his plan and we went to mediation where I had to pay him a mediation fee for a minimum of 6 hrs (between $600 and $700 in fee if I remember right) despite me only being able to stay at mediation for <4 hrs. This change in his plan not only cost me hundreds in first mediation, but also took away the possibility of a court order for spousal support. What’s worse than paying hundreds in mediation fee? Fighting your own counsel (who is supposed to be on your side) at mediation. I sat there disagreeing not only the stubborn opposing counsel, but also my own attorney while he tried to convince me to agree with the other party on 50/50 custody (I wanted 60/40), among a few other things. We had a second mediation because the first didn’t work. Mr. Ricks had another lawyer in the firm attend the virtual mediation on his behalf. Mr. Ricks showed up on the conference at some point, but like in the first mediation, I felt he was more interested in finishing this case asap than in advocating for me. Again, I had to put my foot down when he tried to change my mind on some things. I felt alone and advocating for myself at both mediations, even though there was a lawyer that I was paying for who was supposed to fight for me and help me get what I wanted. After the second mediation, the opposing counsel filed a motion (at this point, Mr. Ricks still had not followed up on his plan of filing a motion for $$ support on my behalf). What did Mr. Ricks decide to do despite that there was a motion filed by the other party, therefore an upcoming hearing? He ditched me, his client, and had me looking for a new attorney to represent me at the hearing for the motion, with not a lot of time left between then and the hearing date. I felt abandoned at the worst timing. Do you think an attorney that actually gave a shiz about his client would do this to them? I’m saying that for what Mr. Ricks charges, trust me when I say you will find better lawyers who take pride in actually “having your back” instead of seeing you as a number.
