I had the pleasure of working with Matthew Sutter for my unlawful termination case, and I cannot recommend him highly enough. From our first consultation, it was clear that Matthew truly understood my situation and the financial and emotional toll it was taking on me, especially because I was pregnant. His professionalism was evident in every interaction, and he always made time to answer my questions and address my concerns promptly. Matthew was incredibly easy to stay in contact with, ensuring that I was kept informed throughout the entire process. Thanks to his expertise and dedication, we achieved a somewhat favorable outcome without the case even having to go to court. His empathy and dedication made a difficult time much more manageable for me and my soon-to-be son. If you need a lawyer who is not only highly skilled but also genuinely cares about his clients, Matthew Sutter is the one to call. Five stars all the way!

Cons
1
Possible inconsistency in service quality and client care
“I am a military veteran.. I DO NOT recommend anyone utilizing this legal company with any important legal issues that has to be handled.. Possibly small issues they can be easily resolved for you. The 1 guy there regarding my case, that gets frustrated easily, he is unprofessional and will use fowl language towards you, he is not consistent with his work, does not show compassion regarding his case, he seems some what knowledgeable but will have you wondering whats going on with your case status. Doesn't fight for you.”
2
Potential breach of client confidentiality
“He did absolutely great! He was very professional and answered all of my questions. He reviewed all my paperwork before he submitted it and gave me great legal advices. 100% recommended!!! I had concerns regarding unethical hiring practices and inequality of women's pay within my place of work/employer. I was able to attain a consultation with Matthew Sutter to discuss the matter. Throughout the process he and his receptionist/admin were very responsive, friendly, and professional. Ultimately, I did not proceed further with legal action. However, Matthew provided exceptional professional guidance and personal advice. I would highly recommend him, I think he is honest and looking to make a positive impact in this world.”

The most trustworthy Attroney office when it comes to auto accidents or my legal consultation. The Attroney was precise but reasonable with full of wisdom. The Attroney was fair and clean with no hidden cost in any matter. We need more attorneys like him in our community. He is an absolute asset for the community Strongly recommend this legal service. The office was located in second floor, and there is no elevator and not wheelchair accessible.

Ms. Kim saved the day. My divorce process spanned more than 2 years and was highly contested. I was awarded a permanent protective order by Fairfax County and then had to continue to battle my ex to save my pension and retirement- as well as my cash and house where I was living with our son. My original attorney did well in some areas but she failed to properly document how I intended to pay my ex his share of equity in the home as well as a portion my retirement. She also wrote the divorce settlement agreement in such a way as to leave the manner in which I would pay my ex completely ambiguous - there was no mention of “cash” or “paid from x account.” Therefore, the agreement I signed I believed was what I agreed to pay and how I intended to pay. Once everything was signed, I believed my attorney was transferring the amount from my retirement into an account in my ex’s name. I went on a vacation to the Bay Islands of Central America to celebrate the end of my divorce. While on a Honduran beach, I learned that my attorney had not initiated that process yet and accused me of lying, claiming I had told her I would be taking out a loan for over $100,000.00 to pay my ex in cash. There was no written correspondence between my attorney and I where I ever agreed to such a stupid solution. It was 2023, a year of extreme tightening by the FED with high interest rates. Why would I have ever agreed to essentially take out a second mortgage at an average 7% interest rate when I had the money sitting in my retirement? I instructed my attorney to explain the miscommunication to my ex’s attorney and to start the retirement benefits division immediately. For over two weeks, my attorney did not do what I asked. She insulted me. She accused me of lying. She attempted to coerce me to give my ex all the cash I had as a way to meet the impending deadline that would be missed. She claimed a judge might force me to pay in cash even though the property settlement agreement that I signed never mentioned cash. She thought she could strong-arm me into doing something terrible to my finances to avoid her having to admit she made mistakes in documentation. Rather than give in, I used my smartphone from the third world country I was in, and consulted with Legal Aid resources. This legal resource is phenomenal. From there, I found Ms. Kim. I told her my predicament and she agreed to take my case while I was miles away and in distress. Ms. Kim found a way for my to keep my house, keep all of my cash, and avoid a “show cause” complaint for missing the payment deadline so that I could pay the way I had always intended (out of my retirement account). She also charged me a very reasonable fee to solve everything- which was roughly $2,000 whereas my previous attorney had told me I would have to pay $6,000 or more and would have to go to court. I highly recommend Ms. Kim. She is efficient, a true advocate, and comes at a very reasonable price.

MS Kim was a wonderful lawyer for me. She listened to my problems, explained to me what she could do, and kept me updated throughout the process. Any time I would email her with a question, she got back to me promptly. Her fees were very reasonable, too. I would highly recommend her to anyone needing legal representation!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Annandale, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
