3
Providing clear explanations and guidance to clients
“In my experience with Joshua Erlich, he took care to listen and translate to me what I was going through in legal terms. He explained to me my options and gave me the means and power to make an educated decision with peace of mind.”
4
Responsive and attentive to client needs
“Throughout my dealings with them, I found both Mr. Erlich and Mr. Owen to be empathetic and patient. They never made me feel like I was wasting their time and they treated my issue like it actually mattered.”
Cons
1
Potential issues with customer service and communication
“The phone troll who took the incoming call was so rude I will never call back, unless desperate for ETOH safery....which means nothing. . Her lack of skills compelled her to transfer my to some rando voicemail in the middle of my sentence I found myself cut off by the clickety clack have her desperation to end of the call.”
2
Selective in the cases they accept
“They only take slam dunk cases, which are few and far between. This guy doesn't do anything for you except cash your checks!”
3
Possible issues with professionalism and interpersonal skills
“Horrible. I previously met with several attorneys from other firms concerning my case. While many of them seemed to be a good fit, I decided to try one more firm just in case. By far, Joshua and Davia created the most uncomfortable, awkward, adversarial, and rude meeting I have ever had in my professional life.”

Horrible Office Mr Erlich didn't even bother to read the material I provided during consultation and blatantly accused me of seeking money yet I this was a terrible and unwanted journey for me. I went to the consultation in person. He was so full of assumptions as if he was paid not to take my case. They could have told me before charging me a chunk of money that they did not want to take my case.

My attorney at the Spiggle Law Firm helped me negotiate a dicey exit with my employer. She explained the steps along the way, and defined legal terms so I could make the right decision at critical points of the process. I would recommend the firm for anyone who needs advice about employment-related legal manners.

Once retained, the Spiggle Law firm was very responsive and provided me with specific and relevant input into my requests for a Religious Exemption and a Religious Accommodation. My employer initially approved my Religious Exemption, but verbally (and in writing) denied my Religious Accommodation request. Once Spiggle Law Firm responded to the denial request, however, my Religious Accommodation request was granted.

Tom represented me in a serious criminal matter. This was my first time having any sort of run-in with the law so of course I was very anxious. Tom was compassionate and is a truly generous man. But do not for second believe this man is not a wise and aggressive defender. He will fight hard and work his tail off for you. It is as if the law is second nature to him. He is the expert you want on your side. Tom was able to get me a much more doable sentence. He is a straight shooter and will not waste your time. He also will keep you informed every step of the way.

Tom represented me in a DC criminal matter in 2012, resulting in a major reduction in a serious charge, a dismissal, and, ultimately, the charge being removed my my record. He is very responsive to calls/emails and an all around good person. I would, without reservation, enthusiastically recommend Tom. He helped me prevent a foolish mistake from destroying my career and I will forever be grateful for his expectation-surpassing work on my behalf.

Mr Abbenante represented me twice in criminal matters and is currently serving as my civil attorney. In both criminal matters, Mr. Abbenante's legal expertise, professionalism and compassion turned what would have been long sentences for a young person into a short sentence and probation. I will always be appreciative. Another positive is that he keeps you informed at all times. In my ongoing civil case he keeps me informed on how things are progressing. I highly recommend Mr. Abbenante to anyone who is facing a criminal or civil case. He is one of the very best. Tom thank you----keep doing what you do.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Arlington, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
