Matt handled my case and it was a pleasure working with him. You have to be patient with him if you want him and the team if you want the most out of your situation. I would absolutely call this firm up again if need be.

Matt was such a great help to me even though he can't represent me. Fast and courteous and responsive. I literally couldn't have asked for someone better and will definitely be reaching out if I'm need of his services again.

Pros
1
Knowledgeable and experienced attorneys who provide personalized attention and strong advocacy for clients
“Bill Tucker and his team were the answer to my real estate prayers! After being transferred to another state for work, my condo sat on the market for over a year in this dismal market with no traffic. I enlisted the help of Bill Tucker and after 3 months, I was relieved of this burden! They fought hard so that I wouldn't have to continue to pay on my condo even after the short sale was over. I truly felt that they cared about me and my situation and could not have asked for a better team.”
2
Excellent communication and responsiveness from attorneys and staff
“Over the almost seven months of handling my case, I was kept informed by both Mr. Tucker and Valerie at all times with either emails or phone calls. I was sent required paperwork to complete with thorough instructions and reasons why it was needed. My phone calls were returned promptly or in a reasonable time frame.”
3
Compassionate and understanding approach to clients going through difficult situations
“Bill Tucker epitomizes the very notion of service! They were patient in explaining everything that was going on. They regularly got me on the phone to walk me through what was happening. Their warmth, friendliness and sense of humor left made the process that much better.”
4
Aggressive negotiation skills and ability to achieve favorable outcomes for clients
“Bill Tucker produced results when negotiating with the banks. I highly recommend Mr. Tucker and Valerie for aggressive, ethical, and thoughtful representation during a very stressful time for me as they handled my short sale.”
5
Efficient and streamlined processes that make the legal experience easier for clients
“The effectiveness and efficiency of the Tucker Law Firm was invaluable. This was our first experience in real estate and while at times we felt a little in the dark through the process, we quickly learned that no news is good news as they worked our case.”
Cons
1
Occasional issues with responsiveness and communication from certain attorneys
“I showed up to their office yesterday to receive legal advice from Laura Butler about legal custody and filing for divorce. I have never encountered a more rude and unhelpful person in my whole life. She expected me to already to know the laws and how the legal system works. She gave me no advice and made me feel as though I had no business even being there.”
2
Concerns about high legal fees and billing practices
“I'm a disgusted after my experience working with this law firm. They will charge you for anything they can possibly think of or create. You will just be a dollar sign and will not be shown any empathy or remorse. My lawyer fees were very unreasonable for the simple civil case I was apart of.”

We had the incredible privilege and pleasure of working with Beth Norton to create our will and advanced medical directive! She came highly recommended from a trusted friend as well as another attorney out-of-state.. She greeted us warmly and from start to finish entertained all of our questions patiently and graciously. The depth of her knowledge was impressive as was her ability to navigate us through the many decisions, making it feel very manageable. We had put off this important task for quite some time. We are glad we did now, because Beth was the perfect attorney for us, well worth the wait! We recommend her highly and without reservation. She and her colleagues are exceptional in every aspect of their practice. Now that the process is complete, we will miss our interactions with Beth and Kayla! It was always delightful speaking with them!

Beth and her entire team were wonderful to work with. They are extremely patient with my busy schedule that stalled our efforts. Once I got my part done, Beth and her team worked like a well-oiled machine to ensure the process went smoothly. Beth is extremely knowledgeable and detailed in explaining every aspect of the process so that I can make informed choices. I highly recommend working with Beth and her team.

Christian is very approachable and great at what he does. He can distill a complex family situation, like lack of natural heirs or charitable intentions like donating a house, and make it simple to deal with when the time comes. Best of all, he makes it easy to understand. Highly recommended!

Chip Royer was our closing agent on a home purchase. After a bad prior experience, I was keely monitoring timelines and potential red flags. There were absolutely no issues with this closing. Chip and his staff knew every nuance of not only the standard requirements for a closing, but also for the more intense VA loan closings. There were literally no hiccups in the process and the team answered every question I had along the way quickly and thoroughly. It is rare to see such detail oriented work nowadays. Chip walked us through every single form during closing and explained to us what we were signing. This was the best closing experience I have had by far. There is no other attorney that I will use. Whatever Chip provides, we will go to him for that service when needed.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What challenges do you foresee in my case?
Understanding potential obstacles helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Charlottesville, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
