Bryan Jones assisted me with post-conviction relief in a difficult criminal case, and he was so tremendously knowledgeable and capable that I retained him to advocate for me in the out-of-state military divorce that followed. I appointed him attorney-in-fact over my finances during incarceration, and he maintains the highest standard of professional ethics. He keeps detailed and complete records of every transaction, and he successfully manages demand deposit (checking and savings), credit, and insurance accounts for me. He effectively navigates the intimidating bureaucracy of VADOC, an admirable feat in itself. I retained him again to coordinate my reentry planning, and I am currently residing in the clean and safe apartment he leased for me with power of attorney. I highly recommend Bryan Jones in any criminal or civil matter. He is a compassionate and dedicated advocate and absolutely trustworthy.

I met with several attorneys to help with a recent case. Bryan was the only one that took the time to ask questions and better understand me, my background, and the situation I found myself in. Every other attorney told me that I had no choice but to accept some fairly harsh penalties to which I was facing. Bryan spent a good amount of time listening to me, afterwards stating that he believed he could help minimize those penalties. When everyone else told me this was not possible, Bryan expressed confidence in his ability to help. And Bryan delivered. This was the first (and hopefully only) time I have needed an attorney in a criminal case, and did not even know where to start. Bryan is someone that made me feel more at ease with the process, and made an extraordinarily bad situation much better for both myself and my family. If you want an attorney that looks beyond just the case and sees you, Bryan is someone you should call.

When I queried Bryan Jones about a legal matter, he answered promptly and courteously, giving me all the information I needed, as if I were an important client instead of someone he didn't even know. He did not stand to gain financially from our first exchange, instead he was genuinely interested in my case. This can be unusual-- it made an extremely positive impression, and I wanted to pass that along.

It is hard to put into words how much of an impact on your life there is when you find someone you love charged with a crime. Even knowing that justice should work in their favor it can quickly become apparent that without someone fighting on their behalf that justice, fairness or even right may not be a part of the outcome. I was very fortunate in finding Bryan Jones when I faced watching my elderly father face charges that seemed quite frankly to me that they should have never made it into court in the first place. While at first we thought the charges should be easily resolved, we quickly faced the fact that without someone to work and speak on my father’s behalf that court would not go well for him, regardless of innocence or fairness. I could not have found a better person / attorney than Bryan to represent my father and help us through the court process. Bryan is compassionate, kind, professional and a very knowledgeable attorney. I would highly recommend him without hesitation to anyone who is in need of someone to represent them or a loved one.

Bryan helped me get my gun rights restored from a conviction in Va. back in 1977. I have lived in NC since 1988 and Bryan was able to complete this task with me only having to make one trip to Charlottesville. Being out of State we communicated mostly by e-mail or phone, Bryan done this well, kept me informed. Thanks again Bryan, Great Job!

Mr. Holub was very knowledgeable and helpful. I called his office numerous times and he patiently and thoroughly answered my questions and addressed my concerns. His extensive knowledge of the Social Security Disability system and how my hearing might play out helped me to feel prepared and a little less anxious. During my hearing, he carefully clarified some of my shaky answers to the Judge. I really felt like he was on my side.

I worked with Mr. Michie to get my Reckless Driving case resolved and he helped me get the best outcome for my case. He convinced the judge to reduce the charge to speeding. He’s the best lawyer in the area. I will definitely use him again if I need a lawyer and I highly recommend people to use him if they need a lawyer for something. He’s an outstanding lawyer!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Charlottesville, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
