I hired John Bedi to handle my bankruptcy. It was a very emotional thing for me to do and John was compassionate and answered my questions. Some answers were somewhat vague but were answered by him and staff as the process went through. He was relaxed and portrayed assurance. He was available as I needed. I had a smooth timely meeting with Mr. Bedi and the trustee. The staff and Mr. Bedi were extremely patient with me and that helped me tremendously. I mostly worked with staff like Maggie. She is a super star receptionist who does I’m sure, a lot more! She kept me on task when I tended to give too many details. Amanda has been helpful and knowledgeable in answering questions for me. Carolyn Bedi is the super star! She is very professional, knowledgeable, thorough, caring and helpful with the many questions I had. She also was super helpful is giving me sources for use in creating a budget and saving money for a better future. Having the resources for a better future to me has made this whole process a better experience. I don’t want to make the same mistakes of the past so I look forward to the future. Overall I am pleased with the service I received.

I will say that the people in the office are very caring. I believe they do WANT to help people, but they are careless in how they handle the information. I actually filed chapter 7 three years ago due to my ex-husband abruptly walking out and leaving me with all of the debt. I went to John Bedi and he was very kind and offered great advice in the office, which I followed to a T. When things got to the courtroom, however, is where things fell apart. The 1st time, he didn't even have all of the documentation there for my case so the trustee scheduled me to come back. I started wondering at that time because the trustee seemed all too familiar with his shenanigans and I started picking up on the fact that she thought he was a joke of an attorney. I came back the second time only for him to not be prepared again. So we, and by we, I mean I came back a third time as he never even showed up. The trustee wanted me to come back again, but I said that I couldn't keep taking off of work or I would lose my job. Thankfully, the trustee had a heart and discharged my case a couple of weeks later. All seemed good until a few months later I noticed that my mortgage wasn't reporting on my credit. I filed a dispute and received a response that my mortgage was included in my Chapter 7. I argued that it had not and that I had requested it to be reaffirmed. I contacted my mortgage company only for an investigation to take place and received yet another response that the mortgage had indeed been included in my Chapter 7. I immediately contacted John Bedi's office to let him know of the error. I sent multiple emails and made many calls that were never returned. Here I had been making on time payments on my home thinking I was rebuilding my credit, only to find out that, once again, John Bedi had dropped the ball. The worst part was that he would never contact me back. I had some health issues at the time so, other than contacting the state bar, decided to let the matter go since I would eventually refinance or sell the home out of my ex-husband's name. The bottom line is I paid a lot of money only to have been discarded by someone who proclaims to be a Christian. I trusted him and that he would take care of my family and me and he did the opposite. I would never recommend him to anyone. There is very little confidence in the follow through or professionalism of John Bedi.

Mr BEDI & his staff, Heather & Maggie were a Godsend in my life! He is the absolute kindest man to deal with, especially at such a stressful time! He took time to speak to & see me whenever there was something I needed HIM for! As for Maggie & Heather - I can’t say enough about them! Kind, caring, understanding are just the tip of the iceberg! They were ALWAYS willing & able to speak with & reassure me! They actually sent me a most beautiful card to tell me that they were praying for me! If that isn’t “above & beyond”, what is? God bless John BEDI & his entire staff!

Mark is a true professional. From the start I really appreciated the empathy and professionalism during one of the lowest times of my life. Naturally I would have loved to see it all go away but that was going to be highly unlikely and the next best outcome was what I got with one charge dismissed. Thank you Mark!

I'm in the process of hiring an attorney for my custody case. Ms. Aloupas offered a free phone consultation. She was quick to respond and set up an appointment. I sent her the documentation for her review before our appointment. When I spoke to her she was very polite, knowledgeable and helpful. She is very easy to talk too.

Ms.Lu Aloupas is awesome. I am a father/Soldier that lives in North Carolina that was enduring alot of resistance from my children's Mother that lives in Virginia regarding Custody/Visitation. I called Lu Aloupas and explained to her everything that was going on and she jumped right on it. We then went to court on the day and she held her ground on what I told her I wanted and now instead of me only getting to see my kids 3 times a year I now get them every other week and more. Her prices are great especially for the greats work and professionalism she shows. This women will fight for you and your rights call her today you will not be disappointed I promise. Thanks again Lu Aloupas !!!

12 July 2016 Lu Aloupas is an extraordinary lawyer. I had an issue with a neighbor who asked the court to grant a Protective Order against me. I was innocent, but I did not have the knowledge to fight this on my own. Based on online reviews, I decided to call The Law Offices 0f Lu Aloupas. This is the best decision I’ve made in a long time. In our first phone call she patiently listened to my jumbled story (I was nervous) and then advised me what to do immediately. She then asked if I would like to come to her office (she has offices in Hampton and Chesapeake) and because she sounded so knowledgeable (and calm) I agreed. When I met her in the Hampton office we went through the basics of the case and then she asked if I would like to retain her services. We discussed the price, and I agreed. Here is my opinion about the cost. Of course I think that lawyers make waaaay to much money. But as I found out, if you don’t hire a lawyer, you will be overwhelmed by the system, and by stress. Her prices are fair. There might be a cheaper lawyer, and I know there are more expensive lawyers, but her value in my case totally justified the cost. My case was heard at the York County Circuit Court. On the date of the court hearing we met before the scheduled time and she explained exactly what would happen. She said “I know you are nervous, but stay as calm as you can.” I thought that’s easy for her to say. She told me to not be surprised if the other party changes his story, it happens all the time. She said not to react to this, that she would handle it. Just listening to her gave me confidence and remarkably, I was less nervous. From the beginning the outcome never seemed to be in doubt. The other party represented himself (huge mistake) and Lu was like a TV lawyer. You honor “Motion to Separate”, objection your honor “Relevance”, Move to Strike Your Honor “Hearsay”. The Judge sided with Lu every time. The Judge dismissed the request for a protective order against me and restored all my rights. I was like someone lifted a building off my shoulders. You might have heard the saying that nobody likes lawyers until you need one. I can personally testify that if you are involved in any legal action you need a lawyer. And if you need a great lawyer, at a fair price, I can, without reservation or hesitation, recommend Ms. Lu Aloupas, Esquire. Dave

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Chesapeake, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
