Terrible law firm worst in Chesapeake. I wouldn’t use them at all. Debt collectors for slum owners associations.

The lawyers of this lawfirm argued this is court "the “unfortunate reality” that teaching in the United States — even for first grade teachers like Zwerner — isn’t without its dangers". At no point should any person considering becoming a teach expect that their future school administrators will brush off an identifiable threat rather than take action. It's a shame that this law firm thinks that teachers should just expect to be shot with a gun by their students. Diane Toscano, Jeffrey Breit, Kevin Biniazan and the school district they represent are morally bankrupt. I will never use them again, and I implore others to do the same.

This woman took $5,500 of mine and did not commence or have one single sit down appointment with me to go over my case. I was sent to court via a letter from her and her assistant (Becky Keys) 2 times! By myself for a class 4 felony offense. This court case was dragged out for 4 consecutive months & 4 separate court dates. On top of that, the “alleged victim” of my case (all lies and pre meditated accusations on me) skipped 3 court dates in a row!!!!!!! Each time the victim “no-showed” the case was continued. In the end, I ended up with “nolle process” on my record after the victim never once showed to court. This lawyer is one of the most incompetent individuals I have ever ever met in my life. I am going to be pursuing taking action against this firm in court very soon as I almost have the funds ready to take action, and have met with a great lawyer (my fathers business lawyer of 23 years) 3 times now to go over exactly how they’re going to sue this firm unless fully reimbursed when requested to do so in the soon-coming future. My record is ruined because of this, NOT TO MENTION the victim can go open this case again whenever they feel the need. This is absolutely terrible in my case, because the mother of my child is not afraid to lie in oath, and she will in fact take me down with lies once again when she feels the need to. Hence after our custody battle doesn’t go her way (me getting any rights to my child for example)… The victim (mother of my child) lied and I have every ounce / gram of evidence to prove so; however, Amanda NEVER ONCE scheduled an appointment with me so I never got the opportunity to show her the novel full of proof and pre-meditation from the victim.. I was rejected to nursing school because of the incompetence of this practice and I will forever make sure EVERYONE IS AWARE of the level of incompetence that comes out of this firm, specifically from Amanda Newins. TAKE SERIOUS PRECAUTION WHEN HIRING THIS WOMAN!!!!!!

Chris may be the best attorney on the planet. I cannot express this enough. His best attributes are very relatable ones. He is sincere, knowledgeable, honest, transparent, helpful, and most importantly, will put your needs first. I had a very specific problem which was quite unique and Chris spent the time, without charging me for every breath he took, to understand my problem and offered multiple resolutions that I was completely unaware of. He is so incredibly smart and competent that any question I raised had brilliant answers with solutions and follow through. I would hire Chris 10,000 times over for anything within his wheelhouse and that is an incredibly vast amount of skills. He is literally the best attorney one can find and further, his team are a strong representation of him. If you listen to this review and believe my words, you will likely want to thank me for the nudge to hire Chris or his team. He is the absolute best!

Chris is an excellent lawyer. That is well documented. But what you don’t see is his excellent customer service. Chris does a great job of communicating with his clients. He never avoided my calls and always followed-up. I’ve had a lot of experience with lawyers and Chris is by far THE best.

Mark is one of the most proficient and calculated lawyers ever. Would say he doesn’t boast how efficient he is so I’ll speak for him. He fights tooth and nail for you and knows his work. Was referred to him from my personal lawyer and he’s worth every cent he requests. Almost like after he’s done you may feel you owe him more the way he represents you in the court no matter what evidence may or may not against you. Dismissal was my result. It’s rare you see a judge smile at how a defense attorney present and represent his client thru trial. Mr. Andrews is one of kind. You will not be disappointed!

I contacted Vania to explore the process of Power of Attorneys and Living Wills. I had no idea what to do. Vania was patient and kind, and incredibly helpful. She asked a few questions and then she promptly sent proofs to my email. When it was time to sign, SHE CAME TO ME and worked around my schedule. Vania is extremely professional and she took what could have been a complicated process and made it simple, helping me navigate the whole thing. I would recommend Vania without hesitation to everyone for all of your estate planning needs.

I cannot begin to describe the ease that Mrs. O’Keefe provided me during my child custody/support issue. She handled everything with ease and helped reassure me along the way and was very responsive to all of my questions and concerns along the way.

In the midst of the pandemic, Vania was instrumental in removing me from a dual guardianship for my sister. She was very professional and did so quickly--even though I did not live nearby. She made a stressful situation easy and I would certainly recommend her to others.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Chesapeake, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
