Mr Short and his secretary were very responsive and helpful. He recommended I do some things to help with my case. He showed up promptly before the court hearing and quickly got my reckless speeding (20 over in a bad spot that’s heavily patrolled) reduced to improper driving.

We had a friend who skipped out on probation when he was released back in 2020. He has been incarcerated for almost 2 months. We drove from NC for the hearing and James explained everything in detail from the best case scenario to the worst, depending on the Judge. He later told us he liked the judge and that there was a good chance our friend would get out that day. Everything went just as he said and we were able to take him back to NC that evening. James was great, he did not sugar coat anything and we could not be more happy with the result. If you are looking for a great lawyer this is the one. Thanks James.

I can't say enough good things about Mr. Short. Recently my family incurred a situation we never had to navigate before and Mr. Short not only provided us his guidance and expertise, but did so with such kindness and compassion. A true gem.

Chris may be the best attorney on the planet. I cannot express this enough. His best attributes are very relatable ones. He is sincere, knowledgeable, honest, transparent, helpful, and most importantly, will put your needs first. I had a very specific problem which was quite unique and Chris spent the time, without charging me for every breath he took, to understand my problem and offered multiple resolutions that I was completely unaware of. He is so incredibly smart and competent that any question I raised had brilliant answers with solutions and follow through. I would hire Chris 10,000 times over for anything within his wheelhouse and that is an incredibly vast amount of skills. He is literally the best attorney one can find and further, his team are a strong representation of him. If you listen to this review and believe my words, you will likely want to thank me for the nudge to hire Chris or his team. He is the absolute best!

Chris is an excellent lawyer. That is well documented. But what you don’t see is his excellent customer service. Chris does a great job of communicating with his clients. He never avoided my calls and always followed-up. I’ve had a lot of experience with lawyers and Chris is by far THE best.

I contacted Vania to explore the process of Power of Attorneys and Living Wills. I had no idea what to do. Vania was patient and kind, and incredibly helpful. She asked a few questions and then she promptly sent proofs to my email. When it was time to sign, SHE CAME TO ME and worked around my schedule. Vania is extremely professional and she took what could have been a complicated process and made it simple, helping me navigate the whole thing. I would recommend Vania without hesitation to everyone for all of your estate planning needs.

I cannot begin to describe the ease that Mrs. O’Keefe provided me during my child custody/support issue. She handled everything with ease and helped reassure me along the way and was very responsive to all of my questions and concerns along the way.

In the midst of the pandemic, Vania was instrumental in removing me from a dual guardianship for my sister. She was very professional and did so quickly--even though I did not live nearby. She made a stressful situation easy and I would certainly recommend her to others.

Mr. Hubbard represented me in a WC case. My experience with him was the most professional and HONEST experience I have ever had with an Attorney. This is rare gentleman. He never told me what to say or not to say in any of our depositions or court cases. A brand new experience for me. Other attorney's would brief me before court etc: going as far as to tell me the questions I'd be asked and how to answer them. Not Mr. Hubbard. He treated me like the honest person I am and I appreciated him for it. I won my case and the plain and simply TRUTH prevailed. Thumps up for this attorney.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Chesapeake, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
