Richard Wexell and his team are the best at what they do. Their lifetime of experience far surpasses using a firm with a roomful of junior attorneys attempting to create a collective approach and solution to family law matters. Working within a process that can have many outcomes, some good/some not. Wexell Milman was able to determine a favorable outcome for everyone.

Richard Wexell assisted me with a legal matter. He simultaneously explained my legal issues and options, while always remaining sensitive to the personal nature of my situation. And on top of all of that, he's a nice guy and our discussions often continued after the clock stopped on our "business". And as other have also noted, his staff are very capable and efficient. I would definitely recommend Mr. Wexell to anyone needing representation in Virginia!

I was a client of Mr. Sawyer. Subsequently I referred a relative to him. He resolved these matters swiftly, according to plan, and very smoothly. I refer anyone considering a possible bankruptcy filing to his office. His partner is also very good. And his staff is very professional and responsive. And, if your situation involves the need to dispose of real estate, he can refer you to a broker specializing in sales by owners in these difficult circumstances.

I have referred friends, co-workers, and family members to Mr. Sawyer for consultation and advice over the last thirty years. After speaking to him, every person I have referred has hired him for their legal situation, be it bankruptcty, adoption, real estate, divorce, business formation, or a simple Will or Trust. He provides excellent advice with thorough and easily understandable directions on what needs to be done, in what order and when. His fees are reasonable and he extends himself to early hours to accommodate client schedules. I have also worked with him and for him on many matters and would heartily recommend him as an attorney for anyone in need of his expertise.

I cannot say enough good things about Jason and his paralegal Jennifer.   I have had a protracted case with Jason going on 6 years now.  I'm grateful I have him in my corner.   Jason is an expert in this field of law and his command of the subject matter is unquestionable.  His advice is always wise and on point.  He's reasonable, fair, and interested in finding the best overall solution (for all parties).  He is also not afraid to tell you like it is when you need to hear it.   He has saved me from myself on multiple occasions.   He's clear, articulate, and efficient in the court room.  He has a knack for cutting thru the minutia and homing in on the critical issues and what's necessary and prudent to argue them.  And when he gets on a roll, it is amazing to watch, as stated I'm glad he's in my corner!   Jason's fees are reasonable.  And it is clear he has my best interests at the forefront and never once has taken any action that could remotely be construed as having his bottom line in mind. No one wants to need to retain an attorney for such an extended duration but I can honestly say I consider him a friend! Jennifer is thoughtful, thorough, and meticulous while being  accommodating and understanding at the same time.  She is always willing to get it done, and is not afraid to hold the client accountable to deadlines ensuring she and Jason can best represent me.  She's spent many a night and weekend on my case and told me when I needed to work the weekend too!  And like Jason it is unquestionably clear she's got my best interests at heart.   She and Jason make a great team!  I couldn't recommend them enough to anyone that needed them!  You would be in good hands.

Jason A. Weis is the perfect pick! If you are someone who is going through a contentious child support/divorce and need a top notch lawyer on your side then look no further. I was lucky to have Jason Weis representing me. Jason, has the ability to assess any difficult situation and provide honest and thorough advice within the scope of the law that is beneficial to the client. Mr. Weis effortlessly navigated through the minefields that my ex-wife and opposing counsel attempted to lay out. Jason was able to understand the intricacies of my case and responded with a strategic yet realistic action plan that awarded me the outcome my daughter and I needed. I admire Mr. Weis’s calm, professional and eloquent demeanor. He did not wavier to the baseless threats or irate behavior of opposing council but rather took charge and spoke only based on facts. I truly believe it was Mr. Weis’s professionalism, knowledge, patience and most importantly his virtuous heart that got me through this challenging time. I am eternally grateful and would recommend Mr. Weis to anyone who is seeking assistant with divorce/child support/custody.

Jason handled my very messy divorce. Complicated custody situation, property disputes, police reports, CPS, custody evaluation - just to name a few things that we had to deal with. Jason always had the situation under control. He will never promise you results that he cannot guarantee, he is very realistic and practical. In the end, Jason was a superstar during the trial. He had an impressive mastery of all the confusing facts related to my case and ultimately I got the result that I've was looking for on all accounts. Jason's team is also very professional and easy to deal with. Highly recommend!

If I could select a 6th star, Danielle is the one that deserves it. I have dealt with numerus attorneys in the past and all fall short of her. Danielle practiced the utmost professionalism and integrity in dealing with my cases. She is compassionate to her clients but also result driven to make sure they get the best outcome possible. She constantly kept me in the loop and would field my worrisome phone calls, even though I am sure I was a pest. She is brilliant in her approaches to dealing with situations. You can tell she is respected amongst other attorneys and judges which goes a long way. When other attorneys told me certain outcomes were impossible, I brought it to Danielle, and she solved it. She is a modern-day Houdini in my eyes. I could not be more grateful for all the hard work she has done for me and I can rest assure I would never use another attorney, nor recommend one. She is definition of what a young upcoming attorney should be. I can confidently say she is a blessing to the law community and will remain at the top, as her career continues. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Danielle. I wish you nothing but the best moving forward in your career.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fairfax, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
