My case was a somewhat complex domestic situation, a misdemeanor charge that could have resulted in jail time. During my first consultation, Senator Surovell listened to my concerns, patiently answered all of my questions, and made suggestions that helped my case. In the intervening months between the charge and my trial, Scott promptly responded to any questions or concerns that came up. Being charged with any crime is scary, and you need a well-informed lawyer to navigate the murky, sometimes treacherous territory of our criminal justice system. I knew that Senator Surovell had a reputation as one of the best defense lawyers in Fairfax County. And he lived up to that reputation Thanks to his skillful handling of my case, the charges were dropped. I could not have asked for a better outcome, and I will be forever grateful for his help during a difficult time in my life. Novelist Raymond Chandler once said, “The law isn’t justice. It’s a very imperfect mechanism. If you press exactly the right buttons and are also lucky, justice may show up in the answer.” Hiring Senator Surovell was exactly the right button to press.

I was charged with a DWI and Civil Refusal back in February and was terrified of the consequences a conviction would entail. Fortunately, a friend referred me to Scott Surovell who agreed to represent me and set a plan in action from our very first call. He helped me understand how the process would take place and our strategy for my defense. As my Court date approached, we continued once before finally going before the Arlington County General District Court. The State Prosecutor had not offered any plea deals so it was to go to trial. Scott was a masterful trial attorney. It was impressive to watch him work and gave me confidence we would come out with a positive ruling. After he dismantled the Prosecution, it was agreed that the Charge would be reduced to Reckless Driving and the Commonwealth would Motion to Nolle Prosequi the Refusal Charge. This was a HUGE relief. I cannot thank Scott enough for his work on my case and would recommend him to anyone seeking a Defense Attorney. 10/10, 5-Stars, 2 thumbs up, the best attorney I have ever interacted with.

He may not be interested in small, poor clients. I needed to hire a homeowners rights and personal injury attorney to protect my family from my condo association's harassment. My wife was even forced to attempt to commit suicide. Most of homeowners association law lawyers seemed to work for homeowners associations but not homeowners. In fact, some homeowners associations law firms told me that they would not take individual cases. But, Mr. Surovell seemed to be a powerful lawyer for homeowners according to his website. So, we thought that he would be the right attorney for us and contacted his office with a big hope. Even his client's Avvo review said that the client shed tears with being saved by Mr. Surovell. Mr. Surovell promptly responded to us at first, and he told us to give him more details. But, after we passed more details to him, he literally has not responded to us for almost 3 weeks so far. We talked to his assistant and associate lawyer by phone, but they just told us that we even could not make an appointment for the initial in-house consultation before he decided to take my case. In case our emails went to his Spam folder, we also asked him to check Spam folder through his assistant and associate lawyer. We called his assistant and contacted his office through his website's form several times, but we did not receive any response or follow-up. He even knew that the opposing party's attorney requested a deadline of our response, he simply did not follow up, which could be advantageous to the opposing party. Even now, we don't know whether he is still deciding, and whether he totally forgot or ignore us as a small client. Even if he is too busy or not interested in small cases, it would be more polite or of common sense to tell us the update/decision or refer us to a different attorney within expertise.

I am a mid fifties professional who one evening exercised bad judgement resulting in a DWI and Reckless Driving in a very unforgiving jurisdiction. My prospects were bleak when I put my trust in Scott Surovell. I followed all his advice and in the end the prosecution reluctantly agreed to drop the DWI charge due to irregularities surfaced by Scott that cast doubt on the eventual outcome of the case. Furthermore, our petition to expunge the arrest record was strongly opposed by the prosecution. At the expungement hearing in front of the judge, I witnessed Scott dismantle the prosecution's case in short order leaving the prosecutor without an effective rebuttal. The petition for expungement was quickly granted by the judge. Upon leaving the courtroom, one attorney after another congratulated Scott on his deft handling of my case. It was an impressive display of tough, effective advocacy by an attorney for his client. I would highly recommend Scott Surovell to anyone in need of a strong, effective legal defense.

I decided to reach out and ultimately hire Ms. Pervaiz after receiving positive feedback from a friend. I am extremely happy with my decision because Ms. Pervaiz was very supportive and professional from beginning to end. At the time, I was in a very tight bind and conflicted on what to do next after reading about consequences that were levied on others in a similar situation to my own. I knew that I wanted to hire Ms. Pervaiz after the initial consultation because she was confident and provided me assurance right away. She had handled similar cases in the past that yielded positive results so I was much more comfortable after reading all the horror stories online. After the initial consultation, she gave me a list of documents to obtain so she can review, understand, and fully assess my case. After I sent over the documents, Ms. Pervaiz made herself available every day until my actual court date. This really put me at ease knowing that I could always reach out anytime I had any questions. I only called a few times mainly to ensure she had everything she needed but the initial checklist she gave me covered it all. On the actual court date, we agreed to meet early to go over any final questions and to explain the process in the courtroom. She made it really easy for me as she did all of the talking. She laid out potential scenarios, explained the details of each situation, and asked what outcome I would prefer. The case ended in a favorable outcome for which I am extremely grateful. I would gladly hire Ms. Pervaiz again and have recommended her to others.

I found Mr. Bodner to be quite honest and forthright in his assessment of my case. He clearly stated his outlook on my case, and the odds that were stacked against me. I took my chances with him, and to my delight – (all-be-it, could be short-lived), the case was eventually dismissed. Besides his un-pretentious nature, and his dignified professionalism, what makes Mr. Bodner so outstanding, was his intelligence and his “court-room” brilliance! Mark knows the law, and he was able to translate his knowledge into a win for me. Although he seems to be very busy, I would certainly recommend Mark to you. Thank You.

As a US citizen I required Dr Park to take over the procedure in order to bring my daughter (Minor under 18) to the country. All paperwork was filed the same day, we had a response and got confirmation in less than 3 month keeping me informed at all steps of the process. PRICELESS!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fairfax, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
